One of the oldest cities of the princely state of Punjab, Jalandhar is situated on the intensively irrigated plain between the Beas and Sutlej rivers. The city got its name after the famous demon Jalandhar, who finds a mention in the great Indian Epic Mahabharata and Puranas. According to another legend, Jalandhar was the capital of the kingdom of lav, son of Rama and there is also another version, which states that Jalandhar have derived its name from the vernacular term `Jalandhar’, which means area inside the water. The city is a must-visit Travel destination of India that offers an array of historic monuments that narrate the saga of the past. Besides historical monuments, there are a number of temples and Gurudwaras that are worth visiting. Some of the prominent tourist attractions of the place include:

Devi Talab Mandir

Located about a km from the railway station in the heart of Jalandhar, Devi Talab is a temple that attracts a horde of tourists from different parts of India. This ancient place has been revamped and a new temple has been built in the centre and of late, a replica of Amarnath Yatra has also been constructed in the ground. Devi Talab also houses an old temple dedicated to goddess Kali. Coverd with gold, this temple is famous for holding the famous 'Hariballabh Sangeet Sammelan' for past 125 years.

Moorish Mosque

Situated in Kapurthala, Moorish Mosque was built by a French architect, Monsieur M Manteaux and its construction started in 1917 by the last ruler of Kapurthala, Maharajah Jagatjit Singh, which took around 13 years for completion. Inspired from the Qutbya Mosque in Morocco, it is a work of genius of Moorish style architecture. The inner dome of the mosque is adorned by works of artists of the Mayo School of Art, Lahore. This mosque is also considered as a National Monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Sodal Mandir

Sodal Mandir is situated the near Devi Talab Mandir on Sodal Road is dedicated to Baba Sodal, who was born in a family of the Chadha clan of the Khatri caste in Jalandhar. According to the history, Baba Sodal’s mother went to the nearby pond to wash clothes and he followed her although she asked her not to do so and go back but he did not listen. Losing her patients she asked him to drown himself in the pond. He asked her to repeat her words thrice and as she did, he took a plunge into the water and never appeared again. N that spot, a Samadhi of Baba Sodal has been constructed, which comprises a painted portrait of Baba Sodal, ornamented with garland and rosaries. There is also tank called Baba Sodal-da-Sarovar where pilgrims take a holy dip. This is also one of the prominent attractions of Jalandhar.

Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi

Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs visited the city of Jalandhar during his tour of Doaba and Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi in Basti Shaikh, Jalandhar is built on the location where Guruji arranged for a meeting with Muslim holy saint popularly known as Shaikh Darvesh. The saint blindfolded his eyes so that he could swear before the Mughal authorities that he had not seen the Guru. This is an auspicious place for the Sikh community and a swarm of tourists from different parts visits this legendry place.

Singh Sabha Gurdwara

The Singh Sabha Gurudwara was built in early 1950's and stretched out to a huge building ater. Every year, large number of devotees from all over the nation celebrates Sikh festivals like Gurupurab (Guru's Remembrance Day), Diwali, Baisakhi, etc. together at this Gurdwara. This is also one of the must-visit places of Jalandar and is thronged by visitors from all over the World, especially during the festive season to witness the culture of the state of Punjab.
