One of the most important cities and the former capital of Gujarat is the city of Ahmedabad and is situated on the bank of river Sabarmati. It is not only the cultural hub of the state but also a major business hub. The city is well known for one housing one of the best business schools of India, Indian Institute of Management (IIM). Bhadra Fort

A historical monument of Ahmedabad that tops the list of tourists places of the city is Bhadra Fort. It was built by Sultan Ahmad Shah, the creator of the city during the time of Maratha rule, in the year 1411 A.D. The forth is famous for housing the Bhadrakali Temple, dedicated to Hindu Goddess 'Bhadra’, a form of Kali. This fort is well known for its richness and it is believed that Goddess Laxmi had once visited this place and gave her blessings to the King that the city will no matter what will be a prosperous one. The fort lures the visitors with its enthralling palace that has curves and balconies, which are elaborately embroidered and landscaped green garden. Today, on Independence Day and Republic Day, the flag hoisting ceremony is conducted inside this fort. Centrally located, the Fort is in proximity to the Government offices of the city.

Teen Darwaza

One of the architectural marvels of the city that is worth a visit is Teen Darwaza. The beautifully curved gates of Teen Drawaza are sure to lure the visitors with its beauty. It is the longest and one of the oldest gateways built in the city of Ahmedabad. This was as well built by Sultan Ahmad Shah during the year 141 A.D. and is located in the vicinity of the famous Bhadra Fort. Intricately carved, this architectural marvel, Teen Darwaza served as an entrance to Royal Square at Bhadra Fort. The windows of this fabulous monument are semi circular and adorned using mesh work. The central window of the gateway represents the tree of life and five palm trees are made covered with snakes. This representation is used as the symbol of the Gujarat Government. This majestic fortress is one of the most adored tourist places in Ahmedabad.

Sabarmati Ashram

Another major attraction of Ahmedabad is the Sabarmati Ashram, which is located on the banks of River Sabarmati and was the center from where the fight for India's Independence started. It was built during the year 1915 and until 1930, the ashram at Sabarmati was the home of Mahatma Gandhi. The ashram houses a museum, library, auditorium and photo galleries. The museum exhibits the life of Mahatma Gandhi. There is an archive of letters written by Gandhiji. Also, the museum contains the manuscripts of his articles; several films composed on the life of Gandhiji & India's freedom struggle etc. There are plenty of books in the library that will give you a valuable insight into the life history of Mahatma Gandhi.

Akshardham Temple

Akshardham Temple is one of the largest and most prominent temples located in Gandhinagar, which is about 38 minutes drive from the city of Ahmedabad. the famous Akshardham temple is a place, which consists of a number of things under one roof like art, education, architecture, exhibitions and research. It is truly an architectural masterpiece. The highlights of the temple consist of the seven feet long idol of Lord Swaminarayan, the chief deity at the Akshardham temple. Made by using tonnes of pink stones, Akshardham temple is one of the most magnificent edifices of modern India, which was built in the year 1992.

Kankaria Lake


An artificial lake, built by Sultan Qutab-ud-Din in 1451 A.D., Kankaria Lake is one of the prominent tourist places of the city. Lying on the south eastern side of the Ahmedabad city, the lake also has a fascinating island summer palace. It is said that Kankaria lake was often visited by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir along with his wife Empress Noor Jahan. It is one of the most favorite picnic spots of the people of Ahmedabad and a place for peace lovers. Adjacent to the lake, lies a beautiful garden called Nagina Wadi.
