Justice for Savita Halappanavar

A tragic death of an Indian dentist named Savita Halappanavar in Ireland demonstrates a fissure in Irish law. She died in woe at University Hospital Galway after doctors repudiated her prayer to abort her miscarried baby even though her life was in danger and told her that Ireland was a Catholic country and the country's law does not permit abortion and that she had to put up with by its laws on abortion. The case has incited a fuming reaction in Ireland as well as all over the World and brought calls for the law to be elucidated to permit an abortion to be carried out if the mother's life is in danger. Even the Catholic Church in India has been astonished at the hospital's repudiation to allow the abortion. The Indian government took Savita's death directly and the Indian ambassador in Dublin met Irish authorities on Friday after the protests outside Irish Parliament on Thursday. The National Commission for Women on Friday said it would raise it with the External Affairs Ministry the death of the Indian dentist in Ireland after doctors purportedly repudiated to terminate her pregnancy on the ground that it was a 'Catholic country'.

In my view, laws are of no use if it cannot protect a person. I agree that abortion should not be allowed but it should be allowed in cases where there is a risk to the life of the mother. Every law comes with certain exception and this is a case of exception and the doctors should have done the needful to save the young woman instead of abiding by laws of abortion. Such laws should be abolished and Irish Government should take severe action against the Hospital. Indian Government should intervene into the matter and pressurize the Irish Government to take action against the Doctors and the Hospital as a whole. It is the duty of the Indian Government to take steps against such inhuman act against an Indian. This act of the Doctors in Ireland was completely against human rights. Even the Delhi Catholic Archdiocese said the mother's life should not have been risked though abortion was a complete no for them. No religion permits to take away life of any human being and even though according to the Catholics, abortion is not allowed, however, it does not permit to risk the life of a mother. This was a total act of inhumanity on behalf of the Doctors. There is no such law which allows such inhuman act. The Catholic Church should also change their laws which risk someone’s life. It is no point just showing surprise about the case but they should change their laws making it lenient.

The society here has a great role to play in providing justice to the lady who died of immense pain and suffering due to denial of termination of her pregnancy. Not only Indians but the whole World should come forward as this may happen to anyone in the World. It is the responsibility of the society to pressurize Indian Government to take up this case seriously and help in getting justice to the lady and her grief stricken family.

I as a Proud Indian support the grief-stricken family in their process of receiving justice and pressurizing the Irish Government to change their laws. Are you in support of it?

The death of Savita Halappanavar is really a great shock for every human being. It is a case of religious backwardness of Ireland. I am in total support of the the grief-stricken family in their process of receiving justice and pressurizing the Irish Government to change their laws. Indian Government should also take active participation in helping the Family of Savita Halappanavar in getting justice.

I whole heartedly support the family of Savita Halappanavar in the process of receiving justice. It is the duty of every Indian to support the cause and pressurize the Irish Government to amend their anti-abortion laws. The case not only proved the inhumanity of the doctors but also proved the backwardness of laws that exist in the nation. Irish Government should take this case seriously and amend their laws and the doctors should work towards fulfilling their responsibility as doctors rather than supporting the illogical and inhuman laws of the nation.
