India Gate was built in the memory of 9000 soldiers who laid down their lives during world war I. Also, known as the all India WAR MEMORIAL , India gate was designed and constructed by adwin lutynes. Located at raj-path , the was as an Identity of its own. This is a monument , which is 42m high. It was built to commemorate the India and British soldiers who died in world war 1 and the afghan Wars. The name of the soldiers who died in these wars are inscribed on the walls. It was completed in 1931. AMAR JAWAN JYOTI is burning under it since 1971 , which marks the unknown soldier's tomb.

The Design and The Architecture : A tour of lutyens daily just has a kick of with the stately India gate at the east end of the broad janpath that leads , as has been said before , to the rasthrapati bhawan . another edition 13156 names engraved on the arch and foundations from a separate memorial to the British and Indian soldiers killed on the north west frontiers in afgan war of 1919. The foundation stone was laid by HRD ( His royal highness ) The duke of Connaught in 1921 and the monument was dedicated to the nation ten years later by the then viceroy lord Irwin.

Another memorial , AMAR JAWAN JYOTI, was added much later after India had said goodbye to its imperial rulers. It is in the form of a flame that burns day and night under the arch to remind the nation of soldiers who perished in the India-Pakistan war of 1965 and 1971. The entire arch stands on low base of red bharatpur stone . It rises in stages to a huge cornice , beneath which are incribed imperial suns.above the both sides is inscribed India , flanked by dates MCMXIV (1914 LEFT ) and on the right MCMXIX (1919).

A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT

Now a days , if one drives down the smooth wide expense of Rajpath on a mid summer night , one might be excuded for assuming that a huge glittering carnival is in a progress at India gate . the entire boulevard up to the monument is lined with cars,scooters and motorcycles and what “ Have- You . in fact , all of Delhi seems to have converged to the emerald lawns of India Gate. The air is thick with chatters , laughter's and the price of a assorted vendors paddling their wares. You can snack on anything from fruit chat , Through bhelpuri ,Chana Jor Garam , Dal ka pakodas , Potato CHIPS to ice cream , candy flows and aerated Drinks.

A PLACE OF RECREARTION : Most of the revelers come equipped with balls , Frisbee or just a pack of playing cards. But India gate has lots of offer in the name of Entertainment. One can watch monkey , enjoy camel ride , blow soap bubbles all over the Lawns , Play with balloons and even get your insights turned out on a Ferris wheel.The best thing to do is to lull on the cool lawns , like a Bar of Ice candy and watch floodlit ARCH and the fountains nearby that seems magically lit up with colored lights. Inscribed on top of India Gate in capital letters is the Line:

To the Dead of the Indian Armies who fell honored in France and Flanders Mesopotamia and Persia east Africa Gallipoli and elsewhere in the near and the far east and in sacred memory also of those whose names are recorded and who fell in India or the north-west frontier and during the Third Afghan war.

THE SHRINE : The shrine itself is a black marble cenotaph with a rifle placed on its barrel , twist by a soldiers helmet.Each face of the cenotaph has inscribed in gold the words Amar Jawan ( Immortal warrior ) . This cenotaph is itself places on an edifice , which has on its four corners four flames that has perpetually kept alive.

The forty two meters tall INDIA GATE situated such that many important reads spread out from it. Traffic passing around India gate used to be continuous till the roads were close to the public due to terrorist threats. When India Gate is lit up , People throng the lawns around Rajpath till late in the Night.

It is a must visit place for tourists and we advice them to see the architecture and natural beauty around India Gate.

Yes India gate is very smart choice to visit. Specially in the evenings but its history is very tragic. It is made on the blood of our known and unknown soldiers. They laid down their lives to save someone. May their supreme sacrifice never go in vain.
 
India Gate is an awesome place.. I have visited this place many times and the names taht are engraved on the walls of this gate shows the patriotism soldiers have shown during their tenure. :)
 
I have been to Delhi once..India Gate looks very beautiful at night.. the lights and the Jyoti in the memory of the soldiers that keeps on lightening all night long is simply amazing.. All Indians should visit this Pious place once.
