Yamaha for the first time in all the years has entered the 250cc segment in India. The Japanese motorcycle brand launched the FZ25 earlier this year. Yamaha did the market incredibly late, and all the rivals already have a product in the segment. Yamaha, however, has tried to cover up for the lost time by offering a brilliant package at an affordable price tag. How exactly the Yamaha FZ25 is different from the competition and has Yamaha launched a winning product in the market? Let’s find out.
Looks
The FZ25 has a stance of the FZ-S but looks much more muscular and grown up. The motorcycle has a calm design and does not get sharp edges like the KTM Duke range. The FZ25 looks mature and not loud.
The FZ25 gets chiseled fuel tank that stands out from the design. The air vents are integrated to the fuel tank that also acts as tank extensions. The headlamp unit is full LED, and there is a small fairing above the headlamp unit. The instrument console is fully digital and shows a lot of information like rev-counter, speedometer, fuel gauge and two trip meters. The FZ25 gets split seats and a single piece handlebar that allows upright seating posture and makes long distance riding easy.
Engine
The Yamaha FZ25 is powered by a single-cylinder 249cc unit that is air-cooled and gets an oil cooler. The fuel injected engine produces a maximum power of 20 Bhp at 8,000 rpm and 20 Nm at 6,000 rpm. Yamaha is known for its extremely smooth engines, and this one is no different either. The torque curve is very flat, and it has a strong mid range, which makes it extremely fun to ride in the city. The engine is mated to a five-speed transmission, and the clutch is very light. It is easy to ride around the city and cruise at 90-110 km/h on the highways. The engine is tuned for smoothness and comfort rather than being outright fast.
Ride and handling
The FZ25 weighs only 148 kg with a full tank of fuel and oil. It is quite light for a motorcycle in this segment. The motorcycle is built on an all-aluminum and lightweight double downtube frame. The lightweight makes it extremely flickable, and it can change directions without any problem.
The FZ25 returns around 40 km/l, which gives it a decent range of 560 km with a full fuel tank. The FZ25 gets disc brakes at front, and rear wheels but Yamaha does not give ABS, not even as an option.
Should you buy it?
The FZ25 is for the mature buyers who are looking for a smooth engine, good ride quality, and longevity. The motorcycle costs only Rs. 1.19 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. Yes, it misses out on essentials like ABS, but one can always learn to live without it. The FZ25 competes against the likes of KTM Duke 250, and yet, it is priced lower and offers exceptional riding pleasure.
