India is a country where cricket and cinema sell like hotcakes. While the former is more of a religion for people, the latter is the biggest medium of entertainment. Not only this, but films also do a great deal in affecting people and their minds. If used in the right way, they can be mirrors of the society. The first Indian movie was made more than a century ago, and it has been a massive change since then. Indian cinema has come a long way since the melodramas, unrealistic fight sequences and dancing around the trees.

Gone are the days when a film was all about the hero, heroine, villain and songs. People were hardly aware of who made it, and what was the idea behind it as whole. Now, the public has become smarter than ever, and wants to be served good content, which is not just for the sake of it. With the emergence of smart viewers, there has been a significant rise in the number of smarter filmmakers. Given below are names of some maverick directors, who are making a huge difference to the Indian cinema.

Vishal Bharadwaj

Vishal Bharadwaj has carved a whole different image of himself among the film fraternity and audience. This is proved by the fact that he has won the National Film Award several times, and has his films featured across various international festivals. A journey that started with the critically acclaimed horror flick Makdee has now reached a stage, where his films are regarded as accomplished works of cinema. His best works include Haider, Kaminey, Maqbool and Omkara, which have won him worldwide acclaim and recognition. He is well-recognised for his brilliant Indian adaptations of classics penned by William Shakespeare.

Dibakar Banerjee

This man definitely knows the nerve of the intellectual Indian audience. It is not without a reason that he is known as one of the most influential Indian filmmakers in the recent times. Having started his career from advertising, he has now become a remarkable director with some brilliant movies under his hood. He has received National Film Awards for his middle-class marvel Khosla Ka Ghosla and the thief saga Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! Critically admired works like Shanghai, Bombay Talkies and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! have added more feathers to his hat.

Anurag Kashyap

Any list of new age filmmakers in Bollywood remains incomplete without the inclusion of Anurag Kashyap. His realistic films have earned him recognition amongst the classes as well as masses in India. He is rightfully considered the face of new wave cinema, which is on the rise in the country at present. Some of the major accomplishments of Anurag Kashyap are Black Friday, Dev D and Gulaal. But it was the two-part gangster saga Gangs of Wasseypur that made him a known name in Indian households. This movie shot him to fame overnight, and made him an inspiration for new directors who had something different to offer.

Vikramaditya Motwane

He started his career as an assistant, choreographer and screenwriter, until Anurag Kashyap’s production house roped him in for directing his début film. This is how he got the movie Udaan, which went on to compete at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 under the Un Certain Regard category. After receiving awards and accolades for the same, he became one of the most sought-after directors in the film industry. Later on, he directed the movie Lootera, which was regarded as one of the finest movies of 2013. This was also a film that established both Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha as recognised actors.

However, in this age, certain filmmakers are changing this image of the industry. To illustrate the names, few have been mentioned in the article itself. Movies like Gangs of Wasseypur, Black Friday, Shanghai, Haider, Omkara and many more have improved the image of the Bollywood industry. These people have been successful in delivering a sensational cinema to the audience.
