Hyundai Tucson Review – A beautiful compact crossover SUV

0

Hyundai Tucson is not a new name in India. The car was introduced way back in 2005, and after dwindling popularity of the vehicle, Hyundai discontinued the vehicle in 2010. The South Korean automotive giant has brought back the Tucson moniker in India due to the increasing popularity of the SUVs in the country. Here is all you need to know about the new SUV in the town.

Looks

The Tucson is placed between the Creta and the Santa Fe. The urban off-roader does not look radical. It has been built on the Fluidic 2.0 design philosophy. The vehicle looks like a scaled down version of the Santa Fe, but on the road, it becomes tough to recognise the vehicle.

The Tucson gets signature trapezoidal grille at the front. The bright LED DRLs make the face of the vehicle very attractive. From the side, the Tucson sits on 18-inch beautiful looking diamond cut alloys. The 172mm ground clearance does not feel much for the SUV, but if you’re moving around inside city limits, this should be more than enough. From the rear, Hyundai has kept the design very simple, and the Tucson looks much like the Hyundai i20 Elite.

Overall, the design is good, but Hyundai could have done something different to make the Tucson feel more special. It misses out on the butch looks but does not look elegant either.

Interiors

There are a lot of things on offer with the Tucson. The dashboard is dual tone with black and beige colour. The central console unit gets dual-zone climate control and the entertainment unit. The 4.42-inch colour, the touch-sensitive display gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The SUV has ample room inside with two cup-holders in between the driver and the co-driver seat. There are a lot of cubby holes too. The car feels premium with leather wrapped steering wheel, seats and the transmission knob. The seats themselves are very comfortable and supports the body properly.

The Tucson is very spacious with 513 litres of boot storage. The vehicle also comes with a lot of smart features like the automatic opening of the tailgate, compass embedded in the inside rear view mirror, electrically adjustable driver side seat, downhill brake control, electronic stability control, hill start and much more.

Engine and drive

Hyundai offers the Tucson with both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engine is a 2.0-litre engine that produces 155 bhp and 192 Nm. A diesel engine is also a 2.0-litre unit that produces a maximum of 185 bhp and 400 Nm of torque. Both the engines get manual and automatic transmission options.

We drove the diesel automatic and found the gearbox to be very smooth and responsive. The car makes a bit of noise while accelerating but at cruising speeds, it falls silent. The engine is very powerful, but due to Tucson’s soft suspensions, the handling is not very great. The ride quality, on the other hand, is very excellent and comfortable.

Should you buy one?

The Tucson does not come with a 4WD option. Also, there is no sunroof in the vehicle. The price of the Tucson is higher than the XUV 500. If you want a premium looking vehicle and a very smooth automatic transmission then the Tucson is the one. If you want a car that you can take for weekend outings with the family, then the XUV 500 will get more marks than this.
