Today, the newspapers are filled with news of women falling victim of various crimes, especially rapes and domestic violence. Although our nation claims to be progressing and aspire to become a developed nation, it is far behind being developed, seeing the present condition of our nation.Even after 65 years of India’s Independence, Domestic violence, which is one of the major issues that women of India are facing, still exist in our society. It is not only faced by the women in the rural areas but also by the women who reside in the city. The major reason behind this is the existence of patriarchy in our society, where male are still considered to be the head of the house and women are still considered to be a material object rather than a human being with blood and soul. The male members of the society, in order to prove their masculinity, power and status indulge into the shameful act of domestic violence. It is rising in our nation and every day several cases are registered and some of the cases are still left unregistered for the fear of the society.

Many studies have proved that working women are less prone to domestic violence and the reason behind this is working women are financially independent and have the capability to sustain themselves even without their husbands and also has the confidence to fight against injustice. However, this is not the case with women who are not working. They become dependent on their husbands from all ways be it financially or even socially. They do not revolt against the abuse and violence of their husbands as they deem that it is their husbands’ right to abuse them. However, there are even cases of working women falling victim of domestic violence but they are quite low in number. Moreover, it has also been witnessed that educated girls as well fall victim of domestic violence and most of them are even forced to leave their jobs after marriage and sit at home. However, there are laws to protect women against domestic violence but all in vain.

In my view, empowerment and education of women is the solution to domestic violence. However, the prevailing gender discrimination in our society is the root cause of all social evils and crimes in our society. Our society needs to change their attitude towards women. Education is important for everyone in the society and by educating the women folk of our nation, which is almost half of our total population will not only help them to fight against the discrimination that exist but also will help our nation to develop and progress. Moreover, the laws concerning domestic violence needs to be more stern and with proper implementation can put an end to this. Another solution to put an end to this is by raising our voice against it and women should work to become financial independent and fight against it without fearing the society. All proud Indians should work towards putting an end to the long persisting crime of domestic violence against women.
