Making a small beginning in ensuring a greater role for women in the armed forces, the Indian government decided to grant permanent commissions in select cadres to those who are inducted via the short service commission route.

Women officers were first inducted in the Military Nursing Service in 1927 and in the Medical Officers Cadre in 1943. Induction of women officers in other branches in the three services started in 1992.

There are currently 1,072 women officers in the Indian Army, not including those in the army medical corps.

In the Indian Air Force (IAF), women are eligible for Ground Duties and the transport and helicopter streams of the flying branches. The current strength of women officers in IAF, including medical services is 793. Of these, 63 are in the flying branch, 132 are in the technical branch, 126 are in the medical and dental branches and the remaining are in the non-technical Ground Duty branches.

In the Indian Navy, women are inducted as officers in the Education branch, the logistics and law cadres of the Executive branch and in the ATC (air traffic control) cadre. At present, there are 258 women officers in the Indian Navy.

The Armed Forces Medical Services have 752 women medical officers, 86 women dental officers and 2,834 members of the all-women Military Nursing Service.

Only way India will gain status of a developed country is by giving 50% of our population (women) power and respect they always deserved but never gained for one reason or the other.

    statistics can lie!!

How many of them are Actually "respected" in armed forces?

men have EGO's, let alone the armed forces guys, its diffcult for a woman to survive in armed forces and those who do, Hats OFF to them!!

    Get tougher

Women will gain respect on the day they somehow get active role in real combat, women are employed in armed forces, but they get special treatment, their male counterparts cannot even dream of. As long as women are projected as emotionally and physically vulnerable, thewill never be able to gain status of equals.

HIstory has PROVED, its written in mythological books, WOMEN ARE STRONGER.

They may NOT be stronger physically , as MEN, but they are strong enough even to run a nation.

And what special treatments you are talking about? If GUYS WANT TO PROJECT they are STRONG, why would they want a SPECIAL Treatment?

Special treatments are FOR weaklings (read Women) !

Can you prove quoting history that women have won a war on their own and made a mark? If you can this will be great contribution to this forum. There are several instances when victor killed the king and his family taking young girls to their harems, and still I have not seen any instances where such girls gathered enough courage to take revenge ("Sasuraal Genda fool" :D). I can act weird sometimes, ;);)

:rolleyes:Akela chana baand nahi fodta.....not good enough. For every woman I can take names of thousands of men who have sacrificed themselves for the cause (that includes men who died fighting alongside Laxmibai Rani).

    for better

 You are quoting from USA sources, USA's social fabric is very much different in comparision to Indian, there is a historical/social/economical reason for this we must understand even the family dynamics is different, and as I said earlier in a different post, for a better future everybody needs to change a little, including men, women and the social norms as all of us have accomodated ourselves to current thought process/system changing one and leaving the other untouched will create more problems . As far as sacrifices during wars are concerned men will outnumber women any time at least 10 to 1. Frankly speaking I don't mind and in fact nobody minds women serving in armed forces, but what is expected from them is to live on equal terms and suffer equally with their men counterparts. To add more: You will be surprised to know that US studies says its boys who are more susceptable to physical/mental/sexual abuses as compared to women by 60%, so cursing system for everything won't do any good, we must participate as equals in this process.

I was talking from my first post already. I still stand by my stand that one example is not enough for the purpose. Yes women did sacrifice themselves..like in Russia during leningrad invasion by Germans, but they served based on same terms as their male counterparts. Indian women have a habit of asking for too much sometimes, if not everytime. I will give you a real example....I am working as CEO in a mid-sized firm and my organization doesn't prefer women for high demanding jobs because most of them feel instinctively insecure and they cannot follow flexible work schedules and most important: they take too many leaves (as compared to male employees). So in our firm women are restricted to desk jobs and in admin./HR work.

    THATS REALLY DISCRIMINATING!!!

GIVE ME YOUR FIRM"S NAME,, I"LL REPORT IT TO "WOMENS' RIGHTS COMMISSION"

I think ITS NOT a WOMAN who is insecure, its YOU who is insecure here, you've got the fear that a WOMAN might take up your Job, like everyone else.

Thank god you are NOT GOD, if it was for you, YOU WOULD HAVE BLESSED WOMEN FOR DOING HOUSEWORK only!!!

:D Giving my up my firm's name is not an option after you divulged your intentions, technically speaking we are an "equal opportunity employer", we are ISO 9001:2000, and we have many government organizations as our client. What you are calling discriminatory is actually a good decision based on ground realities, organizations survive on productivity and profits, thats what we are trying to follow.

stop contradicting yourself. "equal opportunity employer" means giving employment opportunities to women at all levels and not just for admin or hr work!!

Big deal if your iso 9001:2000 and it has been proved that women are more productive to an organisation!!!

Yes they are, they have proven their worth but certain constraints prevent them from rising beyond a certain level (except the one who has risen to a very senior position) or taking certain types of jobs particularly those which require flexible work schedules and field jobs, in general. Anyways let's stick to the forum topic.
