In the ancient times, Women were treated at par with men and were given equal status. Women also received education, participated in the governance and many more. There were many well known women like Gargee, Maitreyee etc who are still known for their contribution to various fields. However, in the medieval period, Indian women lost their status and have been struggling through many social evils. Women in India constitute half of the population and still struggling to get empowered. There is no doubt that there are many women in this era of modernization who have reached the heights of achievements. Indian Women have achieved a lot in the recent times but there are still certain aspects that need reformation in India. India being a democratic nation, where the Constitution guarantees equality of all, women should be given opportunities in politics as well. This will make India truly a democratic nation. We need women to join politics to voice and resolve the issues that women in India are facing today and a reality is that women can handle issues concerning fairer sex in a complete and fair way. Indian Women have joined politics and we have many Indian women leaders like Indira Gandhi, the first ever lady Prime Minister of India. But still women do not get the same privilege as male members in politics. They are still looked down by their co-male politicians. It is immensely important to have an adequate number of women in Indian politics as well as other administrative aspect if we really yearn for empowerment of women. After Indira Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Mayawati, Mamata Banerjee, Sheila Dixit, Jayalalithaa, Sushma Swaraj are some of the Indian women who have been playing a considerable role in Indian politics over a period of time. They have helped India develop and progress in many ways. They are a great example of women empowerment. Another notable example of women in Indian Politics is Pratibha Patil, the ex-president of India. She is the first ever lady to become the President of India and this proves the ability of women in politics. Women representation in politics has been talked about and argued upon several times. In my view, it will be a huge encouragement for the women if they get a clutch on decision-making in governance. Moreover, Women are the ones who are more sensitive and have the capability to understand issues better and this will help in resolving several issues related to women and children. However, every woman in politics, not only represents the say of her fellow females, but also is the voice of the children of the nation. Women, if given opportunity can move mountains and this is what India needs today. We need leaders who can understand the major issues of Indian society if we yearn for a better and developed nation. In my view, more and more women should be encouraged to join politics and help India develop and progress in the right direction.
