Why is India still poor?

Poverty in India is primarily rural. The urban poor are much better off than their rural counterparts. Out of all poor people in India ( family of 5 spending less than Rs 3000 a month), 90% live in villages. That the condition in villages is pathetic can be clearly seen in total unwillingness of urban youth to move to villages. The governments face hard time sending doctors to rural health centers. For a bank officer, posting in a rural bank is considered a punishment.

Still, urban policymakers do not take proactive measures to urbanize rural folks. The rural productivity is pathetic. The value added per farm worker in India is only $385 a year compared to $39000 for a US farm worker. This is because, in India 300 million workers work in farming and related jobs where only 20 million are needed. The unproductive 280 million must leave villages and move to urban areas inspite of hostility of urban middle class toward migrating poor. When these 280 million workers who perform useless tasks today, are employed in real, productive works poverty in India will vanish.

    India is not poor

India is not poor! Have a look below:

    GDP (PPP) 2009 estimate
    - Total $3.298 trillion
    - Per capita $2,930

    GDP (nominal) 2009 estimate
    - Total $1.242 trillion
    - Per capita $1,017

It is the disturbing lack of policy implementation at the grass root level for which many Indians are still poor.

Illiteracy is also a big issue while trying to solve India's rural woes. While educated youths from villages move out for better job opportunities, benefits from the GoI hardly reaches the poor. On its way, it is gulped by corrupt politicians and government officers.

GDP (PPP) 3000USD is "SWEAT SPOT".
After that, U will find living condition as entirely different flying development.

But India problem is that some race is rich and some is very poor, for exmple Assamese. Assam‘s oil doesn't make local people rich, That must lead to a war.

Please explain some more. My naive mind fails to understand your point!

Isn't the same there in China? How come China became the manufacturing capital of the world, where 90% Chinese lives on $100/month? While it is true that China is the Labor capital of the world, please note that India is the Knowledge capital of the world.:)

They are owned by the GoI, how can it make Assamese people rich? Getting smart is not something I expect from you, not anymore!

I guess you are talking about the increasing gape between rich and poor in India, that is what one of the problems Indian economy facing today, government of India is focusing towards Inclusive Growth to solve this, this is somewhat our Finance Minister said in the speach he delivered in the Economic times awards 2010

I think too much spending on military both in Pakistan and India have had a bad effect in these 2 countries. suppose there wasn't huge military spending? the lives of hundreds of millions would have been better than it is now.

    New states

New states are forming in different corners of India. The organizers of the new states are trying their best to get rid form the dominance of the state government and they are willing to crate new states. As for instance the Gorkhaland-Adibasi Pradesh is about to form in West Bengal and there are many revolutions. Struggles are fought by the politicians. The new states are emerging from the bigger states and they will try to run a better government.

    Who said India is poor?

The statistics don’t suggest that. Moreover India is one of the fastest growing economies and is fast catching up with the developed nation. The problem with India is not poverty but population, illiteracy and backwardness. The job is a huge one for Indian policymakers as they have to take into account a lot of factors than any other country but still it’s time that we get over the notion that India is poor.

India is poor because of its leaders, who are more concerned about their power and the money in their Swiss Bank account. The major reason that can be pulled out is that, though India is trying hard to meets the debts, it is not using the money judiciously. More of the money is spent in elections campaigning and fancy infrastructure; that hardly any is left for the real cause. The other big reason is that India is heavily depending on trading and ignoring its real jewels. Agriculture and small scale Industries, if are groomed well then India will surely reap benefits and if government spends money judiciously, then possibly Indian rural areas can too develope well.

india though has a tag of being fastest growing economy, it is actually poor. the reason behind this is the rich are very rich and are far from the common man. besides all this, the politicians are looting all the money allocated for the welfare of the people. then how can the poor come up if the government itself is deeply corrupt?

the answer is very obvious. nothing much is being done about the poor in this country. even if it is done, the politicians and government makes sure that is taken away back from the poor in terms of taxes and stuff like that. there are huge number of bills passed but none of them concentrates on the poorer section of society

india is poor because poor are misguided, looted and ignored by our honorable politicians. they come during the time of elections and show them a distant vision and promise them numerous things. they initiate those things but those are left in the middle. so next time they come, they promise to complete the pending things. and so the legacy goes on and the poor ones are the ones who are made fools.

India as people know is indeed a great country in terms of heritage, culture and traditions, but when we talk about the poor people it is one of the most deteriorated countries in the world. Why the ration of rich and poor is so high in India? There are many reasons to that and one of the biggest reason here is the inequality. Inequality in the resources, work, caste, color, creed and religion. People are offered jobs based on these things and if you are from other caste you will not get job in the company that is owned by some other caste people.

Indian civilization isn’t newly formed and we have a great history that gives evidences of our enhanced civilization since ancient times. The methodology influences of the country lives as well as our culture indeed is a legacy to follow. No matter how modern we become the values will remain Indian. Before liberalization the country was known as a moderate economy, where numerous people relied up on agriculture.

Inequality is indeed the main reason of India being still a poor country because there is so much distinction between the people and according to the reports that says $468 billion illegitimately taken out of the country from 1948. This is a stupendous illegitimate outflow since India isn’t only a mater of concern but of shame as well. The estimated amount was around 1.5 percent of Gross Domestic Product which was taken out illegally.

There are many reasons for the poverty in india and one of the main reason is corruption. The government of india is from head to toe is dipped in corruption and everyone is busy in cooking their own bread, They hardly bother about the common man and their wants. more than 60 percent of people in india prevailing below the poverty line and they are not at all concerned with their issues. India will remain a poor country if the problem persists.
