A consumer can file a complaint if any of his rights provided under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 is violated. If the cost of goods or services or the compensation asked for amounts upto Rupees 5 lakhs, the complaint is to be filed in the District Forum . If the cost of goods or services or the compensation asked for amounts more than Rs. 5 lakhs but less than Rs. 20 lakhs, the complaint is to be filed in the State Commission notified by the State Government or the Union Territory Concerned. Incase, the cost of goods or services or the compensation asked for exceeds Rs. 20 lakhs, the complaint is to be filed in the National Commision.
