India aspires to be developed nation and claims to have a modern society. There is no doubt that India is a society that has been touched with modernization but unfortunately, the mind set of people are still the same. Our society is still a patriarchal society and women are even today considered as the weaker and most vulnerable section of the society. The violence against women is become rampant in India in recent time and the pages of the newspapers are daily filled with various crimes against women. India is listed as the 4th most dangerous nation on this earth.

It is really a matter of shame because once it was nation that gave women a very high status in the society, where people worship Goddess and celebrate their victory over various demons, where women were given even place in the courts of the Kings, where women were given place in the administration and much more. Although, we claim that women have been empowered and have become successful but unfortunately, women still fall victims of social evils and crimes that include domestic violence, dowry deaths, child marriage, rapes, sexual abuse, eve teasing and what not. Rapes are become rampant, especially in the cities and this is due to the male dominance that prevails in our society. We claim to have a modern society but are the increasing violence against women is the sign of modernization? Of course there are women who have reached the zenith of success in various fields but does that prove that women are empowered in our nation? No, women are still falling victims of male dominance, female foeticide, female infant homicide, gender favoritism, rapes, women trafficking, etc. It is not modernization but it is the lack of education and the respect for women. It is a stain on our rich and age old culture that we boast on. Moreover, many societies in our nation consider women to be responsible and they are the ones who invite rapes. We need to change the thinking of the people of our society if we really covet to end the violence against the women of our nation.

In my opinion, we need a social reformation and education and empowerment is the only way to change the status of women in our society. However, talking about the violence against women, this can be ended only by making people understand the value of women and their power and that they are not anymore an economic liability but they are an asset to our society. Women constitute almost half of the Indian population and they need to be protected and given the status that they deserve. Although, the land of law claims to enact several laws but in my view, these laws are ineffective as well as are inefficient in protecting the women folk from falling victims of various crimes and violence. We need to make more efficient and stern laws as well as offer justice to the women that falls victims of the hunger of male members of our society fast. In my view, along with our society, even our legal system needs reformation, if we yearn to make India a safe place for women, where they can move freely without any fear.
