    Vegetarianism in India, Indian Culture

Food plays a major role in developing the nature of a human being. Vegetarianism is practiced and believed popularly in India. Being vegetarian means abstaining from eating meat of any animal and eating only vegetables and fruits. There are many states that practices vegetarianism to a great extent. Vegetarian culture is very much prevalent in India since a very long time. This practice and belief started in India for basically two reasons. One was ethical and religious beliefs and the other was economic reason. With the advent of Jainism and Buddhism in India, the number of vegetarians has increased as these religions preached "non-violence". Intake of vegetarian food also makes a person less violent.

Indian culture has a long and ancient history of vegetarianism. Although, the Aryans used to feed on various non-veg items, later their habits changed and vegetarianism was followed. Later when Buddhism and Jainism came into existence, they strongly opposed animal sacrifice and vegetarianism became more prominent among the followers of these religions. Moreover, vegetarianism is considered as the most healthy way of living.
