Two Lives by Vikram Seth is together a narration of a vicious era seen through the eyes of two survivors and an intimate, memorable description of an intricate, enduring love. The book tells the poignant true story of a friendship, a marriage, and a century. Knitting together the strands of two unexpected lives of Shanti Behari Seth, an immigrant from India who came to Berlin to study in the 1930s, and Helga Gerda Caro, the young German Jewish woman he assisted and later married. It is truly a Vikram Seth book and offers an engaging and heart touching read.
