Touching the feet is a very elegant and beautiful gesture being practiced as a tradition in the Indian culture. Indian culture possesses many wonderful gestures of greeting and regarding the people, touching the feet is one of the best among those. This tradition is usually practiced by the young people to give respect and to show humility towards the elders. Usually in an Indian family wife, son, daughter-in-law and children follow this tradition to convey their regards to their parents, parent-in-laws, grandparents and other elders. On some auspicious occasions, this gesture is mandatory for the younger ones. When the young people give their regards by touching the feet of their elders, the elders in return bless them by gently putting the right hand on the head of the younger person who is doing the action. This gesture of touching the feet, has a spiritual significance in the Indian culture and that is; when the younger person gives his/her regards by touching the feet of the elder person this shows that, he/she is actually putting down the Ego, and in a way offering his humility in the foot of the elder person. Such a gesture makes a person humble and wise. And the elder person being filled with affection give their warm heartfelt blessings in return. This is the uniqueness of the Indian culture that it has attached so much of great significance even with the small gestures of greeting. Kudos! to such traditions of Indian culture.
