There are very few Universities and Institutes offering courses in Tourism....and Vocational courses on Tourism are almost nil. IGNOU offers Diploma and Certificate Courses in Tourism Studies but still almost nothing good. Importance of Tourism is neglected so there are limited professionals in this field.

What should be done to make Tourism more beneficial for the country?

According to records, Tourism is the largest service industry in India, with a contribution of 6.23% to the national GDP and 8.78% of the total employment in India. India witnesses more than 5 million annual foreign tourist arrivals and 562 million domestic tourism visits.

Its not that bad!!!

The condition of tourism ain't that bad in India. Infact, its nice and because of the coming coming commonwealth games the opportunities in this segment are growing more than ever.

Its not just IGNOU, but almost all national universities and college tend to offer a specialised course on the subject. Even the private institutes providing education in travel and tourism have increased in great numbers throughout the country. :o

I wanted to state that with so much potential India should get more benefits from Tourism and related services according to World Tourism Rankings India is on 41 spot far behind much smaller nations like Macau, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, UAE, Singapore, Portugal, Greece, Croatia, Austria, Turkey, etc.

As far as the Tourism Education offered by various institutes...it's more theoretical and almost zero vocational. I completed my 1 year Diploma in Tourism Studies from IGNOU. I got about 36 thinnnnn books but no practicals in regional center and I got my Diploma by passing 4 Term end examinations.

we know that in india many states like himachal, kashmir, rajasthan, goa are totally dependent on tourism for their income. so it signifies the urgent need to strengthen the structure of tourism education in india and specially the upliftment of this field as a profession of esteemed level. the level of our country in this field is definitely low but not at all poor. the need is just to uplift it.

Something should be done in this regard

No doubt many states get their major income by Tourism. Western Culture is moving towards India and thus Tourism has a wide scope and our country should definitely do something about it. Promoting Tourism Education is the basic step towards it. Government and the Universities should do something in this regard as the sources available are really not sufficient as per the scope.

In my view we lack the technical education in tourism which is the need of the hour. Our peer countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand have done well in this section and have achieved good status in Tourism of their respective places. Though we have ample number of tourist places in India, we stand back in standardization of the tourism in our country.
