An international best-seller, "The Namesake" is the debut novel from Jhumpa Lahiri. The Namesake is a cross-cultural, multigenerational story of a Hindu Bengali family’s expedition to self-acceptance in Boston. Jhumpa masterfully explores the subject matter of the complexities of the immigrant experience and foreignness, the conflict of lifestyles, cultural perplexity, the conflicts of adaptation, the tousled ties between generations and paints a picture of an Indian family frayed between the pull of respecting family traditions, and the American way of life. It is a story of love, solitude and emotional upheavals with an incredible eye for detail and ironic observation. The book has been made into a film, however, the book is more worth reading than watching the movie.
