Most of the trading between Gaza and Egypt takes place through tunnels. It is estimated that the trade volume is around $700 million a year. There are about 1200 tunnels employing over 10,000 people where they smuggle cars, tvs, fridges, food, oil and about 300,000 packets of cigarettes. The construction sector is almost 100% dependent on this tunnel trade route. Recently Egypt reduced the trade, however there cannot be a complete end to it because the trade is enormous and both the ends cannot afford to lose the benefits.
