According to Indian Adoption Laws, a person who is and Indian, an NRI or a foreign citizen may adopt a child after fulfilling certain terms and conditions. A single female or a married couple is generally allowed to adopt a child, however, a single male is not eligible for adopting a child. Nevertheless, a single male if willing to adopt a child should apply for adoption via a registered agency or else he is not eligible to adopt under the general adoption law as applicable to others.

With Sushmita Sen adopting a child, the trend of single parent adoption has been rising. In recent times, it has been witnessed that many single female are adopting children, however, Indian laws allow females to adopt a child even if they are single but fulfill certain criteria. However, a single male is not allowed to adopt as it is considered that they cannot bring up a child properly. Nevertheless, there is an exception and recently, a dance instructor Sandip Soparrkar has adopted a young boy and he was allowed only after fulfilling the required criteria.
