Peace is the Mission
The latest statistics show that the army is grappling with a shortage of 14,000 officers. On top of that, around 3,000 officers have applied for premature retirement. Even more alarming is the fact that in both the entry level institutions of the Army-the National Defence Academy at Khadakvasla and the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun-there is a sharp decline in the number of youngsters queuing up to join this year. So serious is the situation that Army Chief Gen. Deepak Kapoor recently went on record to say that if things don't improve, the government may have to go in for compulsory military service. But the million dollar question is why are the youngsters shying away from joining the Army? Is conscription the only answer to this problem?

What do you think??

Gud Morning sir

Yes it is really required that we have such a program in India. It'll instill discipline and a sense of belonging to one's country.but I think a person will never attain patriotism by training and all,it should come within in his own realization.

Let me remind an example to you all :- we had many scams recently exposed in Army and naval force,so does it mean that the persons doing scams were not given training. No its not, Military service should inculcate and teach inert values with strictness and compassion. It should also expose the outer world experience to the persons (which is not the case-now it creates machines who are rigid in attitude and work) rather it should produce humans with flexibilty in attitude and passion towards work.

We should prepare our younger generation to face toughness both physically and mentally, and I guess a stint in military or NCC kind of activities will help achieving it!

MILITARY SERVICES should be made mandatory for all men and women possessing a certain level of fitness and IQ/EQ levels and of course, their qualifications. Today's youth doesn't have a predisposition of joining the defense Forces, just because of unawareness about the exact the demands and perks in regards to the defense way of life.Short service commission (5yrs) should be made compulsory so that once in, an individual will be exposed in the true sense to the ins & outs of the defense lifestyle and will be in a better position to take the career-deciding decision at the end of the tenure, of whether or not to continue. In any case, once in, all will be equally motivated and enthusiastic to complete their tenure. In this way, there'll never be a dearth of officers.

Yes

Serving in the armed forces should be made mandatory for all the people who are capable of doing so irrespective of the gender.

Maybe the defence organisations should market themselves better. Since the youngsters today have wider choices to make, therefore they just don't see serving the nation as one the options. Making the presence feel and the benefits of working for the country should always be highlighted and this would ceate the interest of yougsters in working for it.

To start with, we can make a rule. All persons applying for a job in the government service or contesting to become a politician, etc claims they will serve the nation. To be eligible for these jobs or to register as a contestant in elections should be made dependable on military service.

At least, corruption can be reduced and at the same time military personnel can be increased. Moreover, a law should be made to enable disabled military personnel, or personnel who want a break form guns, etc can work in the government service. This will make military service more desirable.
