    Lieutenant Navdeep Singh, Martyred in a gun battle with Terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, was cremated with full military honors.

    "The last rites were performed with full military honours at the crematorium on Dhariwal Road here, which witnessed a strong presence of military and civilian dignitaries," a defence spokesperson said.

    Lt. Navdeep Singh was fatally injured in a fierce gunfight in the Gurez sector in Bandipore district with a group of militants that was infiltrating from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir through the Kishanganga River, which is the de facto Line of Control in many places.

    The entire operation, planned and led by the young lieutenant, ended in the elimination of 12 militants. The army also recovered arms, ammunition and high quantity of war-like stores from them.

    Lt. Navdeep Singh was an alumnus of Army School at Tibri, Institute of Hotel Management in Gurdaspur, Army Institute of Management at Kolkata and the Officers Training Academy at Chennai. He is survived by his parents, a sister and a brother.

    His grandfather Ajit Singh is a veteran of the 1965 war and his father, Honorary Lieutenant Joginder Singh, had retired from the army as a subedar major and is currently re-employed with the Military Engineer Services.

    The young officer was commissioned in the Army Ordnance Corps in March this year and was serving with the 15 Maratha Light Infantry.

    His family comes from Ucha Dhakala village near Gurdaspur.
