Samsung, the giant manufacturer of electronic goods and leading mobile phone brand has finally unveiled its new Galaxy S5 Smartphone. This is apparently Samsung’s new flagship Smartphone and is said that it is equipped with all advanced features and functionality. This Smartphone has already been in talks and news even before it was launched. The Galaxy S5 is a new generation Smartphone that is sure to capture the Smartphone market like all its predecessors, however, the sales of this phone will start from April in India.
Design
Samsung has supposedly used plastic for the shell, but the back cover has perforated pattern for that differs from the artificial leather looks of its latest devices. Besides the typical Charcoal Black and Shimmery White, the Galaxy S5 will be available in two other colors, namely Electric Blue, and funky Copper Gold. The S5 has a wider and taller body than its predecessor S4 and measures 142.0 x 72.5 x 8.1mm. It is said to be weighing 145 grams, which is also heavier than the Galaxy S4. Below the display is a new home key with integrated fingerprint scanner and capacitive keys for multitasking along with Android’s back button. The phone is made Dust and Water Resistant with an IP67 certification, which stands as an evidence that it is resistant to sweat, rain, liquids, sand and dust.
Display
There were a lot of rumors about the phone’s display that it will have the best display ever, delivering high-quality visuals. However, when the phone was unveiled, it was seen that a 5.1" Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 1920 pixels of resolution, raking in a bit lower pixel density than its S4 predecessor, but still more than enough is equipped in it. The screen is capable of 500 nits of peak brightness, which is pretty extraordinary for an AMOLED display, and 2 nits of minimal brightness, which should come handy for the overall contrast, and for night usage.
Processor, Operating System and Memory
The new Samsung Galaxy S5 is powered by a 2.5GHz quad-core processor (Qualcomm Krait), which is accompanied by 2GB of RAM, which is high enough for smooth functioning of the phone’s applications without any lag. Further, it runs on new Android KitKat operating system, which is undoubtedly the best OS with a user-friendly UI along with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. This phone will be available with a choice of 16GB and 32GB internal storage and is expandable up to 64 GB using a microSD card.
Camera
A high-quality, 16 MP camera is fitted on the rear of the Galaxy S5, along with a 2.1 MP frontal shooter. It claims that the camera now provides the fastest 0.3 seconds autofocus without a lag in shutter. That's an achievement made possible by the dedicated image signal processor, and the combination of Contrast AF with Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF). With the similar 1.1 micron pixels, the sensor is a bit larger, at 1/2.5", to have room for the increase in pixel count. The optics is the same as in S4, but the 16 MP camera is capable of capturing images in 16:9 wide format in its full resolution.
The camera will aslo facilitate 4K video recording at 30fps and the processor as well allows for a few extra camera actions. Selective Focus will let users to hit on objects they want to look sharp, and the rest of the background gets blurred, achieving a shallow depth of field (DOF) effect without special lenses. The new image processing capabilities in Snapdragon 801 are what make 4K video recording and Selective Focus possible. Samsung also flaunts an advanced High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography that lets users to reproduce natural light and color with striking intensity at any circumstances. HDR goes for both photos, and real-time video recording. The 16 MP camera of this phone boasts of f/2.2 aperture, and Samsung's new ISOCELL technology, which arguably means that each individual pixel is isolated. Thus, it can grab more photons from the light that pours into the sensor. This means that it will deliver blur-free pictures even in low-light conditions.
Connectivity
The new chipset supports fast 150 Mbps LTE-Advanced download speeds, and Samsung claims that the S5 will support up to 8 LTE Cat4 bands on all global carriers. There is also an innovative feature in the handset, called Download Booster, which speeds up downloads by combining the Wi-Fi/ac and LTE-Advanced connectivity. In addition, we get BT 4.0, NFC, and an IR blaster for remote control of your home electronics, while wired connectivity is taken care of by the USB 3.0 port at the bottom.
It is for the first time that a Smartphone is equipped with Wi-Fi 2x2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) setup, provided by Broadcom's new BCM4354 5G System-on-a-Chips (SoC). It is an alternative to the 1x1 MIMO chips used in Smartphone, bringing the same multiple antenna capabilities found in tablets and home wireless networking devices.
Heart rate sensor and Finger Scanner
Besides the usual pedometer, diet and exercise recordings that come with its S Health app, Samsung has now paired it with something really interesting - a built-in heart rate monitor, located next to the LED flash. Thos sensor probably works on the same principle that the optical one on the Gear 2 smartwatch does, and you can further customize the experience with an abundance of third party apps, that take advantage of the combined health and fitness trackers on the phone. The above mentioned swipe Finger Scanner is embedded in the home key, providing biometric authentication for unlocking the phone, or for secure mobile payments transactions.
Battery
While talking about the battery, which is one of the major things that users generally look for while buying a phone, the S5 will be getting its power from a 2800 mAh battery, which will perhaps sustain up to 21 hours of talk time, and 16 days of standby with a single charge. While, the power back that it claims when browsing the web and while HD video playback is up to 10 hours and 12 hours, respectively.
The super fast, fingerprint technology and a camera that looks superior than an HD TV, will Samsung Galaxy S5 become the flagship phone of Samsung? Although I did not get a chance to get my hands on the phone; however, seeing the basic specs and additional features like the heart-beat monitor, fingerprint scanner, etc., in my opinion the new Galaxy S5 from Samsung is sure to give a tough competition to its competitors.
