    Hi all,

I have been learning from the posts under this forum. I have now summoned enough courage to post to the forum.

Poverty in India will remain as long as democracy in the present form continues. Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people. There are many political parties and coalitions of political parties. They compete with one another to mobilize maximum number of votes in favour of their candidates during elections. All political parties proclaim their main objective as the welfare of the poor. The poor people are also the least literate. They are the ones who can be carried away with false promises. Hence sustenance of poverty is the hidden agenda of all political parties. The poor defined as the BPL in our country are offered certain perks like subsidized distribution food grains. It looks, at first glance, a good scheme to keep hunger away from the poor people of our country. But on a closer look on the effect of the scheme, we cannot fail to notice the unsustainability of the scheme in the long run. Free supply of food articles to the farm labourers would lead them away from the farms and the marginal farmers would find it difficult to continue cultivation of food grains. As the food production drops, the marginal farmers are also driven to poverty. They will also seek susidized food articles. The farm lands would turn barren and get abandoned. The over all food grain production will, undoubtedly, decrease. However, as the poverty level in the country increases the demand for subsidized supply of food grains through the public distribution system will also increase leading to eventual failure of the system.

There is a need to protect the vulnerable from the vagories of market forces without killing their natural instinct to earn their keep honorably. The distribution of susidized food grains should be regulated to maintain their drive to contribute their mite for the welfare of the society.

Can we not formulate a plan to encourage both production and consumption of farm produce?

The farm labourers and farmers are both essential for food grain production. The benefits of research for increasing farm productivity shall be effectively transferred to the stake holders to sustain their interest to continue in their profession. The efficiency of such a sceme will depend to great extent on the literacy level of the beneficiaries. Hence this basic requirement also shall be addressed adequately to reap the desired success.

I would like feed back from the forum members on the topic.

Mr.JOY JACOB, First we should bear one fact in our mind. Our food production has shot up from71 million metric tonnes to 221 M metric tonnes (the figures are approximate ) from 1950 to 1990.Do you think without the farmers and farm labourers hard work can this be achieved. They worked hard and their due has not reached, if not very little.Thats why they are still in poverty. The benefits are taken away by the traders or some other middlemen. So the subsidised one is not a favour but part of due to them. Similarly our soldiers at frontiers are suffering a lot they should be given better treatment. let me come with more details later on

The government made many policies and plans for rural areas but only about 1/6 of the allotted funds reach to the poor. This thing is accepted by our government...Honest...Great!! And most of us just address our country's problems "indirectly." Sorry people I got emotional.

    Restlessness among poor people

Indian poverty plans are not successful which are taken by the government. Indian people are becoming more poorer because of the recession time. It has been noticed that in the recent years Indian people who are living below the poverty line are commiting suicide and blaming politicians like hell...

India is dealing with poverty because the people who are authorized to take care of them are not actually doing so. The government surely had lot of policies, but then none of them is implemented in right way and eventually they die out. Even the people who are great entrepreneur and even people who are highly educated, they look to grow and develop but selfishly. None of us ever think of working at grass root level and together help people our country become rich ones again.

poverty in india prevails until indians move towards using technology and improve literacy. most of the poorer sections in india are illiterate and do not know ways to move towards development. poor people cannot come up with just schemes that are most of the times for name sake.

poverty in india is something very troubling and worrying. beggars are increasing day by day and people are facing lot of trouble due to price rise. its only the upper class benefiting from the rise in economy. the poor still lye in the same state with things going more gruesome with price rise. i think the poor people must firstly educate themselves and then plan their own strategies to come up because the government remains reluctant to do anything for them

Poverty is indeed is the biggest problem of india that shows the bad economy of the country as a whole. poverty means when people cannot afford their basic daily requirements and that gives rise to beggary. Government should put ban on beggary and must start jobs that suits them and give them employment in any textile industry or the work that suits the person.

Poverty in the nation is considered as the biggest problem nowadays as it has ever been with quite over two hundred million individuals living below the poverty line. Third portion of poor people around the world resides in India as well as the shocking statistic is painted by the big disparity between the poor and the rich. BMWs and Bentlys can easily be seen parked in the slums as well as dying poor man can easily be seen in the steps of a million dollar story building.

The exceptional rise in the nation’s population is one of the major causes of poverty in our nation especially in the urban places of India. Relatively recent rise in the massive increase of poor people is a consequence of main relocation of countryside families towards the metropolitan cities. This relocation or migration happens due to the poor unemployment and less opportunities to earn in villages as well as is worsen by the very fact which there are less job chances in the big cities as well.

Eradication of poverty is main goal of our planning commission since it's inception. there are plenty of policies and programmes of government which are directed towards upliftment of the poor people but unfortunately most of them are not properly implemented. corruption in its implementation took the heavy toll. programmes like MGNREGA PMRY NBS and other subsidies are directly meant for poor masses.

Poverty! This word gives a black spot to the Indian people and defame the image of indians and India in the minds of people across the world. Poverty is undoubtedly the main issue that needs attention by the Indian government. There are many people who cannot fulfill their regular and basic needs, so in that condition they all fall into the category of poor people who beg to earn their living. Government should take action and make reforms to eradicate poverty completely from India.

Why people consider poverty as a black spot, I do not understand this thing. Who have made us poor, do we have any proof for that? it is the Britishers who have made us poor and drained all the indian wealth to their own countries and we blame poor people of being poor. It is not their mistake that they are poor and moreover the indian government is responsible for the same. SO I request you to stop blaming poors for their situation.

Poverty in india is the growing problem and you can see people begging on traffic signals, roads and other places. This gives a bad impression on the tourists who visit india for the first time or may be time and over again. Poverty forces people to kill their conscience and beg or involve in one or the other criminal activities. We should suggest some steps to get rid of poverty!

    Poverty in India
Nearly 38% of India’s population is poor which comes to 380 million people according to a recent Indian government committee constituted to estimate poverty. This report is based on new methodology and the figure is 10% higher than the present poverty estimate of 28.5%. India has the world’s largest number of poor people in a single country.

India is fighting the poverty greatly in number of ways. India's got almost 42% of its population who are below poverty line and the indian government is working hard on making policies to bring up these low lying people. But due to corruption and malfunctioning of public sector, these policies do not work out effectively which is the main reason why poverty still prevails in the same magnitude as ever.

It has been estimated that there will be an increase in Poverty Level By March 2011. An union ministers panel on National Food Security law suggested that poor people in India would enhance by 35 million within March 2011. The plan panel points to 405 million poor by March 2011, indicating Government's requirement of Rs 54,000 crore for food subsidy with addition to 6000 crore as compared to 2005.

India Shows Progress In Poverty. What are the reasons behind this? UN estimates suggests India is making progress in reducing the poverty, India's poverty rate is assumed to fall to 22% by 2015 from 51% as in 1990. This poverty rate is calculated by assessing people's number who live on less than $1.25 per day, a threshold fixed by World Bank.

Anti-Poverty Programs In India are quite helpful in getting rid of poverty. Poverty is rampant in India still, according to NSSO survey in 2004-2005 22.15% people are under poverty level. But Economic Growth cum positive commercial developments have reduced poverty over years substantially in India. 'National Employment Program', 'food for work' programs had harnessed the unemployed as some productive beings.
