Onam is one of the splendid and important festivals of Kerala and s celebrated in the month of August-September. It is believed that this festival is celebrated in the remembrance of King Mahabali and to mark his homecoming. In fact this festival is wholly dedicated to the King Mahabali because it is believed that Kerala had witnessed the best time of growth during the rule of King Mahabali he was the most fair King ever to rule Kerala. However, he was an Asur (one who possess negative thoughts in mind) but at the same time he was generous and according to the ancient stories he scarified his wealth and everything to Lord Vishnu (incarnated as Vaaman Dev) in order to stand true to his words and promise. And when he fulfilled his promise Lord Vishnu blessed him with told him that people of his dynasty would always remember him as a just King. Since then the festival of Onam is celebrated in Kerala it is also known as Thiruvonam, Thiru-Onam or Sarvanmahotsav. It is also believed to be the festival of harvesting and is celebrated for 10 days with full gaiety and pleasure. Flowers, diyas and different cuisines are highly cherished during the 10 days of Onam but the last 10th day is incredibly celebrated when great Onam cuisine is prepared. People dress up in traditional dresses and share sweets and gifts with each other. Several games competitions are organized in different parts of Kerala on this final day.
