WHAT'S the difference between the para commandos and the NSG ? I mean are their opreations different from those of the PARATROOPERS??
diffrence btween NSG and Paratroopers NSG generally deals with internal security threats, including terrist attacks, hijacks, etc,on the other hand paratroopers of commandos are trained for special ops,
Well said vishkash. Let me take the liberty to elaborate on the differences. Let me start with a brief introductions beginning with Para. Para commandos are from the Parachute Regiment. Technically their battalions are designated as Para (SF) meaning that they are Special Forces battalions. Para (SF) troops are volunteers from Indian Army. Now the question is, what makes them special ? Answer is that they are trained to execute unconventional and dramatic missions. Such missions can range from intelligence gathering to deep strikes inside enemy area. A lot of such missions are never talked about and existence of any captured commando is denied. Ideally SF executes tough missions during war. But due to insurgencies raging in various areas, SF troops are also used for COIN ops. SF troops rely on small unit tactics, long endurance treks and such to fight bad guys. Generally they are on their own but also get support from other units depending on situation. Para (SF) is controlled by the Indian Army and is a military unit. Their primary task is to inflict as much damage to enemy as possible. Now coming to NSG, after Operation Bluestar, GOI wanted an organization that could take care of hostage situations while minimizing collateral damage. NSG personnel are volunteers from Army, police and other para-military units. NSG troops are divided into SRG (Special Ranger Group) and SAG (Special Assault Group). SRG is responsible for isolating the area while SAG boys are "door kickers" i.e. they are the one who carry out the assault. NSG troops are trained for anti-terror operations. To emphasize a civilian character of NSG, it is put under the control of Home Ministry and is headed by an IPS officer. I think this info should suffice as of now.
