India is likely to get more funding for agriculture development from G-8 nations, which recently concluded its summit. The meet had mooted a special fund for agricultural development worldwide. Hinting at the possibility, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday, “It has been the US experience that agricultural aid to India always yielded better results.’’

She was flanked by, during her visit on Sunday to an experimental field at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Pusa, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. She said G-8 nations felt “India is well positioned to help us lead to fight hunger and malnutrition in the days ahead.”

During her talks with Government leaders, funding for Indian farmers would be one of the prime issues, hinted Pawar, who during a brief interaction with the media, said, “The monsoon is still not picking up in Bihar, western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and other northwestern areas.” Sources said that with the agriculture sector’s growth rate not rising and with a bad monsoon round the corner, New Delhi would try to negotiate for more funds to revive the sagging agriculture sector.

The indications were in plenty. Clinton said, while US-India cooperation in agriculture went back to 50 years, “At this juncture, we need to strengthen the cooperation once again.” Pawar on his part said India would look forward to reviving the bilateral cooperation.

Incidentally, even as Clinton hinted more money for Indian agriculture from G-8’s $ 20 billion set aside for development of agriculture and fighting hunger world-wide, she did not touch upon issues related to Doha round of talks, where differences came up between the two countries.

She said that earlier the US used to give agricultural aid, but now “more US money is being spent on feeding the people as the phenomenon of hunger, besides being tragic, had the potential of social unrest like we had seen in some of the food riots that occurred recently.”

Though she praised Indian agriculture scientists for helping both the country and world for trying to produce more, she admitted that she had also learnt about the farmers’ suicides, which had been taking place in India. “I know they are doing it for not being able to pay the debts. The issue needs to be addressed,” she added.
