In India, philosophy ans religion are inseparable. Hinduism in its historical development has developed different system of philosophy or darshanas. These darshanas attempt to answer such fundamental questions as : What is the destiny of man? What is God? Who am I? What is the nature of Atma ? Is there a life after death ? What is the nature of the relationship between Brahma - Jiva and Jagat. (God-Soul and the Universe). The answers to these question, when formulated , become a system of philosphy. Since answers are varied, there are various system of philosophy in India. However, their common object is to know the Ultimate Reality.

The system of Indian Philosophy are grouped into two categories : Astika (Brahmanic) and Nastika (Non-Brahmanic). Astika Philosophies accept the authority of the Vedas. Examples : Nyaya, Vaisesika, Sankya, Yoga, Mimamsa and Vedanta -- known as shad darshana.

But the Nastika Philosophies reject the authority of the Vedas : Example : Bouddha and Jaina Philosophy.
