When I was a child, in the mid-seventies, I read two stories by a Bengali author, which made quite an impact on me (they were my first contact with India). The two stories had been published in one volume, and I assume the author was quite well-known, since they had been translated into my (obscure) mother tongue. For many years I remembered the author's name as Chatterjee. However, when I was in Calcutta, some years ago, I spoke to several people about those stories and nobody seemed to have heard about them. It seems that the "Chatterjee" I remembered was neither S.C. Chatterjee nor B.C.Chatterjee - or perhaps it wasn't Chatterjee at all, I am no longer sure after all these years! In the first story, a young boy accompanies his father who goes hunting in the jungle (the story is narrated by the boy), and tells of how they meet different wild animals. I remember his father shoots a bear who was about to kill them. The second story is narrated by a young elephant who tells about the life of a pack of wild elephants. I have been trying to find these stories again for many years, but it has proved impossible, since I'm not even sure about the name of the author! Perhaps someone on this forum recognizes the stories and can help me out...? Many thanks in advance to all of you.
