When it comes to choosing web hosting for any website, it is important to consider the operating system on which the server will run. There are various Operating systems or OS available and the most common among all the other available OS, Linux and Windows are the most commonly used as well as preferred. There are several differences between the two operating systems. The very basic difference between the two is Windows is developed by Microsoft and Linux is an open source OS which generally comes for free. Although both Windows and Linux provides FTTP access to files, however, only Linux provide telnet and ssh access. These helps in opening as well as modifying the files directly on the web server using Unix command. Most of the features run well on both the OS including PHP, mySQL, POP3 etc but using ASP, FrontPage, the .NET environment, Windows Streaming Media, Access, MSSQL is only possible in Windows as Linux is limited to only few technologies.

What are the other differences between the two operating system?

Both the operating system comes with their own pros and cons. Linux OS is cheaper as compared to Windows as the web hosting service provider does not need to pay for the licensing fees. Both the OS provides secured web hosting. In terms of stability, Linux is more stable than Windows as the versions are being upgraded quite frequently. Windows web hoisting is less popular than Linux and for this reason it is little hard to find.
