One it was thought that the modern saga of anti-Semitism and also racism would end with final downfall of Nazi Germany. Well, the thinkers were highly erroneous. What did they fail to realize is that this is a part of any well off and brawny society, living in any part of earth in majority for centuries, if not more. Any such culture believes in the notion – minority yields to majority and this leads to a series of problems. The latest of these have been the series of infamous and horrific attacks on Indians in Australia. What has been more painful is the hushed voice of India, desperate to play down the issue by any means.

The incidents too place by and large during May and June 2009 and as per the reporting in the Indian media, racially motivated assaults were becoming a regular feature against Indians, in particular students, in diverse parts of Australia. Were these attacks inevitable? Not at all since Indian students’ visits to that country is quite old. Reports do confirm that Indian students do form the second largest group of external students in tertiary educational activity in the domain of Australia. It is also true that between 2004 and 2009 the number of Indian students in the domain of Australia increased from 30,000 to 97,000. Of these, 45,000 Indian students live in Melbourne, capital of Victoria State and also the second largest Australian city.

The attacks created a huge response back home in India (barring the government corridors) and even disturbed the Australian government to a large extent. Even if it called for equanimity at the beginning, Victorian Chief Commissioner later did state that some attacks were having elements of racism. Nevertheless, the Australian populace was found to be kind to the sufferings of Indian students.

Even though there is calmness at the moment, there can be a spate at anytime.are Indian students safe in Australia?

This is true that many of the Indian are moving to different other nations for education or profession or business. This is what has created a fear in the mind of the citizen of those nations. The fear basically involves that Indian will take up their job as they are more intelligent and educated. This fear then takes the form of envy, which finally results into racism. That is true that these problems can pop up anytime, but the external factors like recession also played a big role in this event, as its impact filled fear of insecurity in entire world.

Indians have migrated to various parts of the world in quest of better opportunities. The attack of Australians on Indian students have horrified the Indians residing in Australia and forced them to come back to India. The attacks were due to insecurity the Australians were going through of losing their jobs in the hands of Indians and racism was also one of the reasons. The attack create a huge turmoil in both Australia and India and today, people actually do not prefer to go to Australia for higher education or even to look for better job prospects after the horrific attack.
