Bindra clinches India's first individual Olympic gold

Abhinav Bindra ended India’s drought at Olympics by clinching first ever gold in individual 10m freestyle shooting. With this gold India jumps to 10th place in overall Olympics medal tally in Beijing.

A slim smile after a long pause and even slimmer emotions on the medal podium. Indeed, 25-year-old Abhinav Bindra created history by bagging the nation's first ever gold medal at Beijing on Monday in not a very famous sport of 10 meter air rifle event. He scored 700.5 points with the silver medalist managing only 699.7.

Gold, sliver and bronze medals are, incidentally, not alien to this young man from Punjab but getting one at the world's biggest sporting event was unusual enough for the nation to burst into paens for a sportsperson they barely knew. Holder of the gold medal at the 2006 world shooting championship, Bindra was hardly the talk of the media in the run-up to the Beijing event, with newsprint being used up by the likes of Mansher, Manavjit, Samresh Jang, Anjali Bhagwat and Avneesh -- all of whom have crashed out at the first step.

In a nation starved of heroes in sports other than cricket, it took just a few minutes for Bindra to emerge as the latest poster boy of achievement with people from all walks of life celebrating the historical moment across India.

In a matter of just a few hours, Bindra was richer by Rs more than Rs 4 crore with various Governments and organisations announcing their bit for the shooter.

Back in Beijing, a little after the Tricolour went up and the national anthem was played for the first time since the Indian hockey team won its last gold medal at Russia in 1980, Bindra preferred to remain modest and said: "I sincerely hope my medal changes the face India's Olympic sports. I worked hard, left home and trained in Germany. It proves that if you keep working hard you have your day some day and it was fortunately my day today. For me life will go on as usual but I sincerely hope Olympic sports get a leg up. It's not a priority back home and I hope more focus is paid to these events."

Bindra, who had finished seventh at Athens four years ago, was a picture of poise on the podium even as defending champion and silver medalist this year Zhu Qinan broke into tears at having lost the top slot. However, the only time Bindra showed he was out of sorts with the bigness of his achievement when he forgot to shake hands with the bronze medalist Finland who smiled, insisted and patted him understandingly after the national anthem was over.

    'Laurels for nation'

Flooded with greeting calls from friends, relatives and admirers, Dr AS Bindra, Anhinav's proud father said, "My son has proved that 'Singh is King' in a real sense. He has brought laurels for the whole community and for the whole nation. "I had sent him an SMS in the morning, 'Abhinav you can do it, go for it', but I am sure he must have not seen it. On hearing the results, I was breathless and started screaming in joy," a beaming mother Babli told mediapersons.

    Doon swells with pride

Dehradun: A spirit of jubilation, pride and euphoria was the flavour of the day in Dehradun, where Bindra spent a significant part of his formative years. From his birth in 1982, his walking past the gates of Riverdale School as a shy Lower KG toddler in 1986 and later at Doon School, where he spent two years from 1993. And today, Abhinav has given back much more.

If you want to see the video of Abhinav Bindra’s victory event, then their is a link below click on it and enjoy India’s victory.

I am also proud of him but we are not suppose to take pride of him because indian goverment has not given a single ruppee for his training. If his father was not multimillonre, perhaps he would not be able to win the Gold Medal.

Sushil Kumar wins Bronze to give India second medal at Beijing

Sushil Kumar brought smiles on the faces of millions of Indians across the globe by giving the country its second medal of the Beijing Olympics after Abhinav Bindra brought home the Gold earlier. Indian grappler Sushil, bagged a bronze in wrestling’s 66 kg freestyle event, exactly 56 years after KD Jadhav brought glory at Helsinki in 1952.

Indian grappler Sushil Kumar won the 1st repachage round against American Doug Schwab and pinned down Belarussian Albert Batyrov in the second .The glorious moment came after Sushil outclassed Kazakh grappler Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakastan 2-1, 0-1, 1-0 to win an Olympic Bronze medal.

Sushil won two repechage rounds after he had lost his first grapple in the morning to a far superior Ukrainian Andriy Stadnik 3-8.

    What is Repachage

Wrestlers who only lose against the two finalists make up a repechage. The repechage matches begin with wrestlers who lost in the first round (including the matches to obtain the ideal number) against one of the two finalists up to the losers in the semi-finals by direct elimination. Winners of the two repechage matches each receive a bronze medal.

Earlier in the day, Sushil proved easy meat for Ukrainian Andriy Stadnik in the first round of 66kg freestyle wrestling event, leaving the Indian grappler`s medal hopes in Beijing Olympics hinging on the repechage.

Pitted against a far superior opponent, Sushil managed to score a technical point even though Stadnik led the first period 2-1.

In the second phase, Stadnik simply toyed with Sushil and scored six points and it looked a gross mismatch with the Indian struggling against the dominant Ukrainian.

"Stadnik was far superior but I don`t have any regrets about Sushil. He tried his best but just could not do anything," coach PR Sondhi said.

"Stadnik was outstanding in the beginning and I think that was playing on his mind in the last period, Stadnik was just too good for him," he added.

Boxer Vijender ensures another medal for India

    by : PTI

Beijing, Aug 20 : Boxer Vijender Singh ensured another medal for India at the Beijing Olympics when he outpunched Carlos Gongora of Ecuador in the quarterfinal of the 75kg category bout here today. With this victory, he is now assured of at least a bronze medal.

The Bhiwani pugilist, one of India's best medal hopes, was ahead in all the four rounds and clinched the bout 9-4. The Ecuadorean had no answer to his rival's flurry of punches and trailed 1-4 in the second round.

Vijender made the difference with his left-hand jabs and crucial uppercuts to which Carlos had no answer.

With the score reading 7-2 in favour of Vijender after the penultimate round, the Ecuadorean needed to go all out in the fourth and final round. He did manage to close the gap but Vijender's evading tactics and excellent footwork won him the bout.

Vijender is the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal

Vijender Kumar has lost to Cuba's Emilio Correa Bayeaux in the middleweight (75kg) semi-final at the Worker's Gymnasium on Friday.

Emilio won the bout 8:5 to book his place in the final.

The loss means Vijender will get a bronze medal as according to the rules, both losing semifinalists are given a bronze each.

The Cuban negated Vijender's height and reach advantages by playing from a distance. He easily dodged the punches that Vijender threw at him and took a 2:0 lead in the first round.

In the second round Vijender came out firing on all cylinder and managed to push the Cuban on the back foot. Vijender won the second round 3:2 but Emilio was determined not to let go of the lead.

Though just one point separated the two boxers after the second round with Emilio leading 4:2 but in the third round he extended his lead by three more points as Vijender failed to land any punch.

In the last round the Cuban boxer tried to play safe after scoring a point.

However he was warned by the referee for negative tactics and Vijender got two more points. But in the final analysis it proved to be too little too late.

Emilio, son of 1972 Munich Games gold medallist Emilio Correa Vaillant, was precise with his blows. He did not resort to wild arm swinging or uppercuts but relied mostly on straight punches, which paid him rich dividends.

"Once he went 3-0 ahead, a comeback was always difficult. I tried my best and reduced the gap in the second round but could not really pull it off," a dejected Vijender said after the bout.

"I'm very upset and want to say sorry to all for I could not win the bout. But I promise to come back in 2012 Olympics and beat this guy and win gold," Vijender said.

"I had prepared well for his right punches but his left proved equally strong and I often had no answer to that," Vijender said of his opponent, whose tactical superiority was evident as he hit the Indian before backpedaling fast.

The Haryana lad was still happy to have won India's first boxing medal and said, "I believe, boxing will see better days in India. We made good progress in the sport and it showed here."

Coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu was not too unhappy either. "I'm happy that at least we finished with an Olympic medal, it was a breakthrough for us. For the first time, three Indian boxers reached the quarter-finals. We have shown what we are capable of and the whole world is now watching us," Sandhu added.

Vijender's medal will add to a gold and a bronze that Indian athletes have already won in shooting and wrestling respectively.

Abhinav Bindra won the 10m air rifle event for Indian first-ever Olympic gold and then wrestler Sushil Kumar won his 66kg freestyle category repechage and claimed a bronze medal.

i am a big fan of vijender singh who is lord of indian boxing. no wonder he has won so many gold medals and we should be proud of him. we all waste our energy and money on praising those nonsense cricketers who do nothing except going for ads. we should praise and encourage all the Olympic winners and boost their confidence.
