India has been the land of most momentous literary works since ancient times and continues to show its significance even today. However, not all are privileged to create any work of literature and that is not because of lack of passion for writing but because one is ignorant of the letters of the alphabets.

Illiteracy is the basic cause of sluggish development of our nation. India managed to reach a 67% literacy rate in 2007 which is far behind the world’s average rate of literacy, 84%. There also exists a wide gender gap in the literacy rate of India. It was found in 2009 that 76.9% of males and 54.5% of women are literate in India. 35% of the world’s entire illiterate population comprises of Indians. This indeed is a statistic that is shameful for all Indians. Rate of growth of literacy in British India was quite slow.

Post independence growth rate was still better though it wasn’t very impressive. With a remarkable 90.92% of literates Kerala is the most literate state in India whereas Bihar with 47% literate is the least literate state. Several states have shown progress in the field of education and have been on toes to improve educational standards. Some of the states have done a lot to ensure implementation of government schemes like National Literacy Mission, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Mid Day Meal Scheme, etc which aim to eradicate illiteracy. The majority of India’s illiterates dwell in rural areas which are the less developed regions of the country. Various social and economic barriers prevent the spread of education to every household. Complete eradication of illiteracy is a matter of time but a small step by an individual with an intention of spreading education among one and all may be a huge leap for mankind. Anybody who can read, write, compute and one who can apply his learning in day-to-day life will be considered ‘literate’.

Education and knowledge is a way to liberalization. That is true that many of the languages and knowledge has been born in India, which is one of our glories. But looking at future, we cannot dwell on our historical era. It is time now for every Indian to pledge to uproot illiteracy and spread the light of knowledge through education. Government is surely making effort towards eradication of illiteracy, but even the citizens of India should participate in this social reform. Today people after getting education moves to better nations; none of us thinks about moving towards the rural areas and help the people understand the value of knowledge. The other point is we should stop child labor. Because of poverty and suffering, these deprived children, start working at a very tender age, putting their education aside. Their parents also persuade them to work in order to have more money. Therefore we need to fight against these odds to promote literacy.

The development and progress that our country has made on the international front definitely goes to rising literacy rate. We are rising above many illogical and superstitious rituals and customs because of modern education. Government has started many literacy missions to provide education to interior regions of country. I hope these efforts will make INDIA 100% literate very soon

this is a positive sign that india is improving from the previous illiteracy conditions. gradually people are realising the importance of education in life and hence the eduction system is witnessing a steep rise in children enrolling into schools. now with education made a fundamental right i think india will sooner be almost completely literate..

Illiteracy is the root cause of poverty and superstitions. People should get proper education at the right age in their lives. It is a good indication that more than 70 percent for people are becoming literate and getting as well as imparting education for the ones who cannot afford.

Yes India is getting independence from illiteracy.
Our literacy rate is increasing rapidly from year to year. New universities, government new policies to students (like free education), made peoples found interest towards education. But we are producing many graduates every year and our government cannot assure jobs for them. So I feel like this thing is completely messed up. Government should take some concern over it. Gujarat government should be taken as example by state and central government

India is indeed gaining independence from illiteracy as many people are now paying heed and proper attention towards studies. Earlier only service class people used to train their children and make them study and join some courses because they have no business and other option for their child to earn in future. but these days business class parents also sending their children to study as they gain a lot of knowledge and become a well civilized human being.

The education system of India is credited for the leading edge that the Indian students hold over their peers from other nations. The large numbers of government and private institute have been established throughout the country in order to build the future education force. Some of the international organizations have worked with governments to provide good quality primary schooling to students in rural areas. Microsoft India has partnered with 12 state governments to set up 14 Shiksha academies to offer a spectrum of education resources.

Is india actually gaining independence from illiteracy? well, it is true that people these days are laying stress on education as well as trying hard to provide education to their children. But still many people are there who are still living below the poverty line ad work in dhabas or other stations to earn their living at the stage of studying. so its quite tough to say that india gaining independence from illiteracy.

Yes, most of the people in India have realized the importance of Education in one's life. Therefore parents are laying emphasis on their children to complete their studies at any cost. Much of money is actually drained into studies as people want their children to get educated. Within no time we can expect India to become completely ridden of Illiteracy.

India is a country that is rich in literature, culture, tradition, heritage and ofcourse natural beauty. Although rich in literature, India has been regarded having the maximum number of illiterates in the world. However, the literary rate of India has increased to 74.04% in the recent time which is a notable change. Government has come up with many policies to provide basic and primary education to every children between the age of 6-14 years and one of the major reform in it is enactment of the Right to Education Act. It can be said that India is in the verge of gaining independence from illiteracy.

With introduction of the Right To Education Act, many children are getting education and this is helping India in gaining independence against illiteracy. Illiteracy is a curse for the nation and a barrier for its progress and development. However, with the various initiative taken by Government and various schemes offered by Government, India is gaining freedom from the curse of illiteracy.
