Importance of Intaking of Folic Acid in Pregnancy

    Folic acid is one of an important ‘Vitamins B’. This is an indispensable vitamin that produces the Red Blood Cells and DNA in the human body, folic acid is significant for brain development, nervous system and spinal fluid. Basically the folic acid is already present in the green vegetable and the pulses as Folate. This vitamin; folic acid is immensely required and necessary during the pregnancy because it plays such a big role in developing the brain and the nervous system of the baby in fact it can prevent the baby from a dangerous neural tube defect like the Spina Bifida, it also prevents Miscarriages and tremendously helps in reducing the birth defects in the baby. Hence the doctors strictly prescribe the lady to intake a daily supplement of 4mg of folic acid along with the diet rich in folates. The intake of folic acid should be initiated right from the day, one decides to conceive a baby up till the first three months before conceiving. And this routine could be carried forward till the first six months of pregnancy. A pregnant lady should increase the intake of fruits, pulses and vegetables and other food items which are rich in folates such as ; oranges, strawberries, melons, pineapples, papaya, raspberries, boiled eggs, lentils, noodles, kidney beans, tomato juice/soup, wheat germ, steamed broccoli, jacket potato, fenugreek, radish leaves, beet-root, spinach, peas, corn, lady finger, cauliflower, oats and whole wheat breads.
