Most of the Indian parents have this mentality that parents teachers’ meeting is a waste of time and usually is not beneficial. They take that meeting or an half an hour talk with the teacher of their child very lightly as if they are not at all bothered about knowing the performance report of the child. But i have a fair advice to those parents who perceive the PTM as futile that parents teacher meeting is actually the time when you can freely talk and discuss with the teacher about the performance of child in his/her class. This is a vital time where you would come to know about how does your child behave and act in all the activities of the school and class.

If you have any problem with the school’s system or with the teaching pattern then that can be freely discussed with the teacher right that moment. But the parents should keep a point in mind that they are going to discuss the things related to their child and not to fight or argue with the teacher. Some parents tend to argue with the teachers and behave dominantly which is completely a wrong approach. Teacher is there to teach, support and to motivate your child and he/she is conveying the genuine report about your child’s performance. Thus parents should first of all change their mentality that the PTMs are in vain and secondly they should take interest in their child’s progress and correcting the mistakes. It is important for the parents to be concerned with their child and his education.

PTM is a very important platform for the parents to receive information about the performance of the child. However, many parents do not take them seriously. Some of the reasons are:-

. They are too busy with their own careers and lives.

.They do not have enough respect for the teacher to think that her advice could be helpful for the child.

.They think that their child is doing too well for them to bother about a PTM.

. Sometimes, children who are underperforming do not inform the parents about the PTM!

What can be done to make PTM a norm?

Teacher and parents are equally responsible for the academic development of a child. Teacher can only devote few hours towards your child’s academic progress(i.e., only in the school), but what about the rest of the hours? These few hours of conversation between a teacher and a parent gives a crystal clear idea regarding the teaching style(to the parents) and the sincerity of parents towards their ward’s education (to the teacher). Development of a child has to be done in a two way process. If any parent attends the parents’ teachers’ meetings, then it shows the commitment of that parent towards his/her ward’s educational development. So, it was neither ever an outdated way to measure your child’s progress nor is a futile effort put on by the educational institutions today. Thus, all the parents should be aware of this fact and actively participate in these meetings which can brighten their ward's future.
