Honor killing is indeed a shame for the so called modern Indian society. We think that casticism has disappeared from our society but it is not so, rather it is making its roots stronger than before and this is also much depicted in the horrendous act of honor killing! Honor killing refers to a heinous act of killing a boy and a girl of the family or clan members to rescue their pride, caste’s and community’s dignity. It is also committed due to few other reasons as well like, when a girl or a boy gets married to the person of the same Gotra (a Gotra basically refers to descendants of common, often mythical, ancestor, and all such descendants are regarded as siblings) it is considered to be a sin. The couple who tries to go out of their boundaries of Gotra have to become a prey of honor killing. Further, according to a religious rigidity ; one can never get married to a person of another religion (e.g. A Hindu is marrying or loving a Muslim boy). One can also not have an extra-marital affair and have pre marriage sex together . In all the cases the girl and the boy are seen as the criminals who directly violated the pride of the community and caste and hurt the family values. Honor killing is now prevalent in the whole country. But it is more in trend in the rural areas of the state Haryana where the caste system is still prevailing. Delhi and Tamil Nadu are also catching up the trend.

As far as casticism and orthodox ideologies would persist in the Indian society, no one can think of stopping the act of honor killing. The young and innocent couples would be brutally killed and the chauvinists of the society would host the flag of their fake ego’s and menial mindsets. It is really sad to see that on the one hand we are progressing in literacy and modernity and on the other hand murdering the innocent people for their ‘no fault’ and to rescue the false pride.
