Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav was born in Bulandshahr District, Uttar Pradesh. During the Kargil war Yogendra Singh was part of the ‘Ghatak’ (Deadly or Lethal) Platoon of Commando from 18 Grenadiers. On 4th July 1999 early morning “Ghatak” Platoon was given the mission to capture three strategically important bunker positions on Tiger Hill. Their path was through a snowbound vertical cliff at a height of 16,500 feet. Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav volunteered to lead the assault. He started climbing the cliff and fixing the rope for further attacks on the feature. When they were only half way an enemy bunker opened fire with rockets and machine guns. His commander and two soldiers fell to this heavy firing. Yogendra singh Yadav understood the gravity of the situation and continued to climb the cliff under heavy fire. Three bullets hit him in his groin and shoulder but in spite of that he completed the remaining 60 feet and reached the hilltop. He crawled up to the enemy bunker threw a grenade killing four enemy soldiers and neutralized the enemy position. This brave act by Yadav made it easier for the rest of the platoon to climb the cliff top.in spite of being grievously injured He attacked the second bunker and neutralized it with two of his fellow soldiers in fierce hand-to-hand combat, where he killed three enemy soldiers. This exemplary act of bravery motivated the rest of the platoon. They quickly climbed the cliff under heavy enemy fire and attacked the enemy to capture Tiger Hill, which was strategically a very important position. Grenadier Yogender Singh Yadav was awarded with India’s highest wartime gallantry award Param Vir Chakra for his sustained display of bravery and courage. Initially the PVC was announced for Yadav posthumously but later it was discovered that he was alive and recovering from his injuries in a military hospital. It was actually his namesake who had died in the mission.
