    Dear Friends,

Monsanto, Dupont etc.. are companies that manufacture genetically modified seeds. These seeds are made by introducing foreign organism (such as bacteria) DNA into the plant nucleus. GM seeds could have several artificial attributes in their genetic structure - e.g. built-in pesticides , termination capability (seeds that do not grow fruit after the initial planting), etc.. Basically, their genes could be programmed in anyway these companies see fit to meet their revenue targets.

However, GM seeds are known to cause irreversible long term health damage - hormonal imbalances, cancer, gender neutrality etc...They also wipe out nature's biodiversity - indigenous crops that have existed since millennia. In India several dozen varieties of traditional rice are already extinct due to western malpractices in agriculture.

Sadly, these seeds are not only extremely harmful to human health but are also directly responsible for thousands of farmer suicides in India. Our farmers are forced to buy new seeds every season since these seeds terminate themselves after the initial planting. GM seeds also require huge amounts of water compared to traditional seeds. Gujarat which has hundreds of GM cotton farms has huge irrigation projects for this reason alone. This also leads to a depleted water table in the state.

Poor Indian farmers take huge debts to buy these expensive seeds, weedicides (also sold by Monsanto) and irrigation equipment. Also innocent farmers are coaxed into practicing mono culture, thus putting all their eggs in one basket. So if crops fail, our farmers either end up killing themselves, migrate to cities as laborers or turn to Maoists to fight such injustice.

Monsanto markets itself as a solution for the global hunger crisis. But it is well known that food shortages across the world are due to improper storage and distribution. IMF and World Bank also pressurize the Indian government to adopt these unproven technologies. Most of Europe has already banned or highly restricted GM technology. In India however, these companies continue to thrive and recruit top talent from our universities. You may have read that the Indian government recently approved the production of BT Brinjal.

Companies like Monsanto are highly organized bio-terrorists. They sell a failed science to control the world's food supply and aim to patent every single plant grown in every single field. They are a grave threat to India's national interest and security.

Therefore, I strongly urge you to

    1) NOT work for these companies
    2) NOT allow them into our schools and campuses.
    3) NOT own their stock directly or indirectly
    4) ENCOURAGE organic farming, cross breeding and other proven alternatives

Please watch this videos and help spread the awareness.

i dont think we are in a age to grow genetically modified crops. india is a nation with large area for cultivation. all it needs is good cultivation and harvesting techniques rather than going to GM crops. we should enhance the cultivation of our indigenous varieties of crops and promote their propagation rather than going for some foreign varieties.

we indians are not in a age where there is deficiency of land or crops and so it would be in our best interest to refrain from such genetically modified products. such aspects must be preserved for the far future. india should concentrate on improving the land utility techniques and harvesting techniques by providing farmers new and hi tech instrumentation.
