Indian Women have always been dominated by their male counterparts in every sphere of life. Even after 65 years of India’s Independence, Indian women are considered as the weaker and the most vulnerable section of the society. They are still subjected to several social evils. India has a patriarchal society and the want of a male child, who can carry forward the legacy, is the root cause of gender discrimination that exists in our society. Although, women represent half of the population of India, but women are still struggling for empowerment. Although, many women in this epoch of have reached the zenith of achievements, there are still many women who are suffering from various evils. India being a democratic nation, where the Constitution guarantees equality of all, women should be given opportunities in every aspect. Women folk of India face a lot of discrimination in every field and sports is not an exception to it. It has been witnessed that women are now getting into the field of sports and have been quite successful. These women have brought glory and fame to our nation. Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, Mary Com, etc, just to name a few, have fetched us immense glory even in International Sports. However, it is a sad tale that gender discrimination exist even in the field of sports. Even after proving their efficiency and capability, women are still looked down by their male counterparts. Favoritism also exist in the field of sports and this is always in favor of the and it has been also witnessed that women sportsperson are paid just 1/10th of the male and this is one of the many examples of gender discrimination. It has also been seen as well as heard that these female sportsperson are not provided with proper amenities, which create a major hurdle to their success. The gender discrimination in the field of sports can be very well acknowledged in Indian Cricket, where women cricketers are not at all given importance, although cricket in India is preached like a religion. In my opinion, to remove this long persisting gender discrimination in our nation, we need to reform our society completely. It is of no use boasting about our rich culture, tradition, etc if such things like gender discrimination still persist. Discrimination in the field of sports is an utter disgrace because sports is a field that has nothing to do with gender and it is a way to keep a human body fit. Government should take steps towards providing proper facilities to the women sportsperson as well as encourage them to do well in their field. Gender discrimination in India can only be ended by reforming our society. A social revolution is the need of the hour and it is the duty of every Indian to work towards improving the status and condition of women sportsperson in India. Every parents should encourage their daughters to join sports and make this field as well as the society free from gender discrimination.
