Forgotten Women Leaders of India

    Women since ancient times were given a very prestigious position in the Indian Society and they emerged as good and efficient leaders of the Nation. However, there were many women leaders who are forgotten today. Some of the forgotten Women Leaders are:

    1. Pandita Ramabai: She was known as Saraswati for her insight and eloquence. She went through a lot of stuggle in life. She was the founder of Arya Mahila Samaj. She was the one who advocated the appointment of women inspectors in schools and admission of women students in medical colleges. She also founded a school for children and widows.

    2. Swarnakumari Devi: She was a novelist and wrote over 25 Bengali books including Chinnamukul, Phuler Mela to name some. She was a pioneer woman novelist at that time and was the chief editor of Bharati a monthly family journal. She formed Sakhi Samiti for social welfare. Swarnakumari was elected as a representative from Bengal and was awarded the Jagattarini Gold Medal by the University of Calcutta. She was the president of Bangiya Sahitya Sammelan.

    3. Aruna Asaf Ali: She was a freedom fighter who was involved in the Satyagraha Movement and an active member of the Quit India movement. She was named as ‘Grand Old Lady of the Independence Movement’. She also played a huge role in forming the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW). She was awarded the Nehru award for International Understanding.
