Gujarat; is a colourful and warm place where people are truly warm hearted, very cooperative, soft spoken and good at hospitality. If you sometime get to visit Gujarat and fortunately being invited by a gujju family make sure that you are not on diet or fasting because they are going to feast you with numerous of mouth watering delicacies. Gujarati food is unique as unlike the North and South Indian food it is both sour and sweet in taste. And there are vivid varieties of food and snacks are available which are never to be missed. Gujarati food is primarily vegetarian and rich in nutrition’s, the cooking style is just different, as Guajarati’s make use of a combination of different spices and flavours that makes their food completely exotic. The traditional Gujarati thali is mainly consists of Rotlo, sweet Dal, kadhi, Sav tamata nu shak, rice, chutney, papad and shredded cabbage and carrot’s salad. The staple food consists of homemade pickles, buttermilk (chaach) and salad.

The typical Gujarati thali consists of roti, dal, rice, and shaak/sabzi (a dish made up of several different combinations of vegetables and spices, which may be either spicy or sweet).

Some of the special foods of gujurat are....
  • Undhiyu- it is a mixed vegetable dish of root vegetables, raw banana, eggplant and fenugreek fitters. It is cooked in earthen pot and that too underground.

  • Handvo- it is steamed cake made of dal ,rice and bottle guard.

  • Surti locho- this is street food made of coarsely ground lentils and flat rice with lemon juice, chutney

  • Khandvi- it is prepared from gram flour and youghurt.

  • Dhokla, thepla, muthiya, fafda, kichu are some of the famous food of gujurat.
