Akshaya Tritiya is one of the most auspicious festivals of the Hindus, which is also known as Akha Teej. It falls on the 3rd day of the bright phase of the moon known as Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakha of the Vedic or the Hindu calendar.

History behind Akshaya Tritiya
The festival of Akha Teej or Akshaya Tritiya is considered as an auspicious festival owing to several reasons. This day is marked as the birth of Lord Parashurama, the 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this very day, it is also believed that Veda Vyasa and Lord Ganesha started writing the great Indian epic Mahabharata. However, the meaning of “Akshaya” is infinite, that which never ebb. It means that this particular day can never be absent in the Hindu calendar. Furthermore, it depicts the planetary position of the Moon, Sun and the Jupiter and according to astrology, all the three comes collectively under the Mrigshira Nakshtra. It is also believed that on this day of every year, the moon and the sun are brightest, marking the auspiciousness of the day. Another reason for considering this day as an auspicious one is because, according to the Hindu mythology, the river Ganga, which is the largest and the most pious river descended to earth from heaven. On this particular day, it is believed that Devi Annapurna was born and Kuber, the curator of wealth received the position and wealth by the grace of Goddess Lakshmi. There are various other mythological significances of this day according to the chronicles present in the history.

The festival of Akshaya Tritiya is one of the most significant festivals of the Hindus. This festival is considered to be the best time for starting new ventures and it is believed that any thing that is started on this day will yield fruitful results. Owing to the various chronicles of mythological significances, it is also believed that buying of gold is a part of the ritual, which marks wealth and prosperity. Furthermore, during this period, several legends were born, which makes it a more auspicious day for the Hindus.

The festival of Akha Teej is celebrated all throughout the nation and several religious rituals are carried out to mark the day. Apart from buying gold, charity is done to mark the piousness of the day. In the state of Orissa, on this very day farmers start farming their lands by ploughing it and the fabrication of chariot for the auspicious Rath Yatra of Puri is commenced. People keep abstain from food to perform religious rituals on this day. Furthermore, in the State of Bangal, it is marked as the beginning of the new financial year and new ledger accounts maintained after performing puja of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi for smooth running of businesses as well as for prosperity and wealth. Thus it is one of the most auspicious occasion for the Hindus.
