Education has become one of the pre-requisites of modern Indian society. Education is both a modern and a traditional social force. Though education assumes modern forms and enacts a role that suits the requirements of the modern society, it has a long standing history of its own. Mutual dependence of these is such that one cannot exist without the other. The present society is bery much based on modern education, and edcation as such is a past and pasrcel of the modern society. "Given a purposive orientation, education can be a powerful instrument for reshaping and modernizing the society." Education provides necessary knowledge and skills which enable an individual to operate efficiently in the society and also to contribute to its successful functioning. Education has been functioning as a powerful means of cultural transmission. This in fact, one of the basic function of education as a social institution. But educational institutions do not exist in a vacuum and do not function in isolation. They are an integral part of the society. Education is firmly entrenched in the wider social network and is reciprocally related to other social institutions. Among the principal social institutions which are influenced by education and which in turn have influenced it mention may be made of family, economy, politics, religion, and social stratification. In view of the crucial position that education occupies in relation to these institutions it seems to have immense potentialities for social change and modernization.
Education is the process of empowering one with the skills, knowledge, values and beliefs required to live on this human life. It is the only tool which can modify and mould the mindsets of the people. If the mindsets of the humanity is altered, all other things will fall into places. It is the only medium of exchanging thoughts and ideas. The thoughts are pillar to any kind of progress in this society. The acquisition of education helps one to understand the need of essential changes in our social system. Any individual cannot give his or her full until he or she is fully aware of the context to be worked upon. Thus, it is the need of hour, to educate all the beings on this planet; if ever we want to see reformed changes in our society.

The importance of education remains unquestionable in every kind of society – be it an underdeveloped one or a developed one. Both need it for growth and sustainability. Nelson Mandela rightly quotes, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” The knowledge to maintain the balance between economic prosperity and social coherence along with environmental stability can only come from proper education, particularly when responsibility of all of this trickles down to each and every citizen of a nation. Thus, in every sense education is the only investment which comes with a guaranteed return.
