Do all Indian women have access to their rights in India? Veena, a senior advocate from Chandigarh, says: “It is difficult for most women of India to learn and demand what is rightfully theirs. The Indian Constitution and a variety of Indian laws guarantee right to equality, right to life, right to employment, right to a violence-free life but Indian womenare not yet equipped to be independent and in control.”

Social Activists agree that it is seldom easy for an Indian woman to file a complaint. When she files a complaint with the Indian police or court against her husband, she has to be prepared to be served with a divorce petition. While the case continues to collect dust under the ‘Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005’, the real victims of domestic violence end up losing precious time, money and emotional energy fighting, just to hold their heads above the water.

With cases of s*xual or Physical , Mental harassment at the workplace, Indian women are afraid to approach a senior or Boss for help for fear of a bad reputation, etc.

Indian Young girls from backward districts in India are often moved from state to state as domestic help. Despite child labor being listed under the Indian Penal Code ( IPC) as a crime, does it stop the abuse?

The Immoral Traffic Act says only a brothel owner or a person living on the wages of a s*x worker can be prosecuted, but we find there are scores of women s*x workers or Prostitutes being arrested.

Despite having the Dowry Prohibition Act, women report that ‘Streedhan’ is never in their possession.

Anna T, an Indian software professional involved in Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, says that women only seek the help of the judicial system when left with no choice. Highly qualified Indian women employees in the IT industry put off motherhood for fear of receiving the pink slip. Does this mean that women must give up their statutory rights? “No,” says an acid victim who got justice after a long legal battle, “the fight for Women rights must go on.”

i dont think so as none of them are very concerned of knowing their rights. they are more concerned about the televisions and serials without much knowledge on their basic women rights. indian women have long been away from such outside world and so this is the main reason why they do not even know that they have so called "rights" entitled to them solely.

its the pressure, the women have from the society that keeps them strangulated and smothered, away from rights, rules, etc which they are entitled to. women are looked down upon by men as weak humans and this is becoming the reason for more and more in-discrimination taking place against them. it is high time that women rise and realize their value in society. many men are here to support them, but its just the lack of their initiative.

Not all! There are many women who does not know about their rights and duties. They are unaware about the government and what all their rights are. They don't even know that they have the right to speak and tell their problems to the government. All the government related issues are simply alien to them. They are busy in earning their bread and butter they do not have much time for all this. Women who live in the remotest place faces this situation where they are not allowed to talk to anyone and have many restrictions on them.

Crime Against Indian Women is increasing day by day and i do not think that they are aware about their rights as well. In 2006, 36500 molestation cases, 32000 murders, 7500 dowry deaths, 19000 rape cases against women were reported. As per figures announced by National Crime Records Bureau currently, Madhya Pradesh is most unsafe state in India for women, and New Delhi is the most dangerous city for Indian women.

I think Indian women shy away from practicing their rights which is not favorable to them in anyways. Women should behave strongly as men do because they Indian women have become equal contenders in almost all the fields where once upon a time only men used to compete. Shying away from their rights and not asking for what's rightfully theirs would only show their weakness.

Indian women are hardly aware about their rights and duties. They do not know the importance of their rights. There are many rights based on domestic violence, woman harassment provided by the government of india which she can easily use against the guilty but she hardly knows those rights and hence cannot use them. Education can definitely play a vital role in teaching those rights to these women.

Indian Women are still unaware of their rights especially in the rural areas, however, the women living in the metros or in urban areas are also to some extent unaware of their rights. It is due to lack of education and awareness. Most women still remain confined within the four walls of the house and are sacred of the societal norms. Going against it and fighting for their rights against the social evils like dowry, domestic violence, etc is a far cry. Media here can play a crucial role in creating awareness, helping women to know about their rights and how to avail it. Education can equally play an important role in it.

It has been witnessed that women in India are still unaware of their rights that are conferred by the Indian Constitution and other statutes. Because of this lack of awareness especially among the women in the rural areas, they become the victim of many social evils. Educating them about their rights and duties can work wonders in empowering women and making them aware of their rights and duties.

India is changing so as the Indian women. With spreading of education all over, women are becoming aware of their rights, especially the ones that reside in Urban areas. However, many women in the rural areas are still ignorant about their rights as some places still do not have schools or women are still kept inside the house. It is important for every women to know their rights and fight for them and this will help in bringing about a major reform in our society.
