Divorce is not unfamiliar to modern India. In modern India, the divorce rate is found to be higher than what it was a few decades ago. In the absence of reliable statistics it is very difficult to estimate the actual rate of divorces in India. It could however be generalized that the rate of divorce is higher in the cities and nuclear families in the villages and undivided families. In the modern times due to the stress on the Nuclear family, the fading of Romantic Love, Changing roles of Indian Women, Sexual Permissiveness the marriage institution is undergoing many uncertain changes and such changes are also responsible for the divorce to take place. There are few other significant reasons that are creating favorable conditions for divorce and differences among the married couple to take place such as; Cruelty of husbands against their wives, Interference of In-laws in the personal matters of the couple, Mental problems, Unplanned Marriage, Economic Hardship, Education and Economic Independence of Women, and Sexual Maladjustment can cause conditions for divorce. A divorce affects the network of social relationships of husband and wife. It introduces complications into the relations of both husband and wife after separation. Especially in the Indian context, both the individual becomes the victim of gossip and irritating comments.
