BrahMos Hopes for Orders Worth 10 billion US Dollars by 2018

The Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace hopes to bag global orders worth USD 10 billion for its BrahMos cruise missiles in the coming decade, a top official here said.

After successfully working on the contracts for the Indian Navy and Army, the New Delhi-based JV is now poised to expand in the international market and some of the contracts are already in the pipeline, BrahMos CEO Sivathanu Pillai said. "The political leadership has cleared the export of BrahMos anti-ship missiles to mutually agreed friendly countries and work is underway to finalise contracts," Pillai said, without identifying the nations.

Many nations across the globe are taking keen interest in the deadly supersonic BrahMos cruise missile, which will remain unmatched at least for the coming decade.

According to earlier reports, South Africa, Chile, Kuwait and some other countries, which do not pose any potential threat to the Indian and Russian navies, have been included in the shortlist of BrahMos recipients. The JV set up by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's Mashinostroyenia is ready to meet the demand for the cruise missiles, which could exceed 1000 units in ten years, half of which would be for export.

BrahMos Aerospace hopes to produce two thousand cruise missiles of various modifications at its facilities in India and Russia, while work is at full swing for the development of submarine and aircraft-launched versions.

This is great news :) I would love to see India as a large exporter of arms and ammunition in the future because thats where the big money is :)

I have no idea why has our government not shown much interest in develping our own technologies for small arms which sell like hot cakes across the globe.. why should just China and Russia be selling guns .. why not India as well?

New BrahMos-2 hypersonic cruise missile

Russia and India will jointly develop a new BrahMos-2 hypersonic cruise missile, the head of the BrahMos company said "At a meeting of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on military-technical cooperation, we decided to set up a working group on the development of the BrahMos-2 missile," the company's CEO, Sivathanu Pillai said.

"The new hypersonic missile will have a top speed of over Mach 5, which would make it impossible to intercept," he added.

Established in 1998, BrahMos Aerospace, a joint Indian-Russian venture, produces and markets BrahMos supersonic missiles, whose sea-based and land-based versions have been successfully tested and put into service with the Indian army and navy.

Pillai said that the company had finished the development of the airborne version of the BrahMos missile and the Indian air force had chosen the SU-30 MKI Flanker-H multirole fighter as a trial platform for the missile.

The BrahMos missile has a range of 290 km (180 miles) and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 300 kg (660 pounds). It can hit ground targets flying at an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and has a top speed of Mach 2.8, which is about three times faster than the U.S.-made subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

The head of BrahMos Aerospace earlier said that the recent acquisition of an assembly plant in the state of Kerala from Kerala Hightech Industries Ltd, in addition to the main plant in Hyderabad, would allow the company to increase production to 50 BrahMos missiles a year and fulfill orders from the army on schedule.

Analysts estimate that India could purchase up to 1,000 BrahMos missiles for its armed forces in the next decade, and export 2,000 to other countries during the same period.

BrahMos!! It can carry 300kg warhead!

It is three times faster than any other cruise missile out there. It is nine times more powerful than other cruise missiles because of its kinetic energy from supersonic speed.

brahmos can be launched in a vertical & horizontal position. if the target is in the opposite direction it can take 180 degree turn, it is also the most agile cruise missile in the world :)

New Brahmos variant successfully tested

A BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with a strike-range of 290 km was on Thursday successfully test-fired in a vertical launch configuration for the first time by the Indian Navy.

With this launch, BrahMos has become the world's first and only supersonic cruise missile capable of being launched from both vertical and inclined positions from naval platforms.

"BrahMos missile was successfully test fired in vertical-launch configuration from an Indian Navy ship in the Bay of Bengal on Thursday," Defence Ministry sources said in New Delhi .

The test, the sources said, was carried out at noon from a moving Rajdoot class warship. The vertical launcher used in the test has been designed and developed by the Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Corporation.

"The test has proved and demonstrated the new universal vertical launcher designed and developed by the Corporation," they said, adding, "The mission objectives of the test were fully achieved."

The launch, carried out in presence of senior Navy officers and DRDO scientists, will give a boost to the future deployment of BrahMos in the naval platforms, they said.

"This will give a boost to ongoing programme of future ship installation for the missile. It will be installed in vertical launch configuration in all the future ships of the Indian Navy. This will include the both ships under construction and the ones who come back to shipyards for refurbishment," the sources added.

Indian Navy's second line of Talwar Class ships, under construction in Russia's Kaliningrad Shipyard, will also be equipped with new universal vertically launcher modules.

"Indian Navy's second line of Talwar Class ships, known as the 1135.6 Class in Russia, will also have these vertical launchers," the sources said.

BrahMos has already been inducted in INS Rajput ship in inclined configuration and its land launched version is also in service with the Indian Army [Images].

The IAF is carrying out structural modifications on the Su-30MKI aircraft to develop an air launched version of the missile.

Attempts of integrating the missile in submarines are also on at Russian shipyards.

During the recent visit of Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov to India, both sides agreed on developing a hypersonic version of the missile to be known as BrahMos-2.

BrahMos successfully tested in Pokhran

By : zee news

The latest land attack version of the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile with a range of 290 km was successfully test-fired for the second time on Sunday in a month in the Rajasthan desert and is ready for induction in the Army.

"The missile was successfully launched at 1115 hours in the morning and in the next two-and-a-half minutes, it hit the bull's eye in the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan," an official said.

This was the third test-firing of the latest Block II version of the missile. The missile which has been developed jointly with Russia can carry a 300-kg conventional warhead.

After today's test, officials said the development phase of the Block II version of the missile was over and it was ready for induction in the Army. They said the mission objectives of the test were completely fulfilled.

A version of the BrahMos is already used by the Indian navy.

During the test, Army's Director General of Military Operations Lieutenant General A S Sekhon, Artillery School Commandant Lt Gen Rao and Additional Director General (Artillery) Major General V K Tiwari were present.

The launch of the latest land attack version of the missile being developed for the Army was also witnessed by DRDO's Chief Controller and BrahMos Aerospace Chairman A Sivathanu Pillai and DRDL Director P Venugopalan.

During the second trial on March 4, the missile hit its target from a distance of around 90 kms at the Pokharan test-firing range.

In the first test on January 20, the missile failed to hit its target due to glitches in the homing device of the missile. The missile had taken off successfully but deviated from its path in mid-course and landed far away from its target. Sources said the defects were rectified at the time of the last test when it went on to hit the target.

They said that the "unique" technology in the Block II missiles made them "unparalleled" and would help the armed forces hit even "insignificant targets" hidden in cluster of buildings.

"The new seeker is unique and would help us to hit our targets, which are insignificant in terms of size, in a cluster of large buildings. India is now the only nation in the world with this advanced technology," an official claimed.

DRDO officials claimed that BrahMos would be able to start deliveries of the 240 missiles ordered by the Army in two years from now as per the original schedule. The Army has already inducted one regiment of the Block I version of the missile. BrahMos is an Indo-Russian joint venture company with its headquarters in Delhi.
