Chikungunya virus is an insect-borne virus of the genus Alphavirus which is transmitted to humans by virus-carrying Aedes mosquitoes. Chikungunya causes illness with symptoms which is similar to dengue fever. Chikungunya manifests itself with an acute febrile phase of the sickness which lasts for only two to five days, followed by a prolonged arthralgic disease that affects the joints of the appendages.
