The term NGOs stands for Non Governmental Organization that are meant for pursuing the welfare and development works and activities for the society, communities, deprived and underprivileged sections of the country. Where the government lags behind in fulfilling the conditions and in facilitating the facilities, privileges and special provisions then there arises a need to have an organization that can work for the facilitation of all those things for the people of the society. A number of NGOs are working in India for the welfare and for uplifting the backward and unprivileged sections, numerous of projects for child's care, education, female foeticide, family planning, employment, women, rural development, women empowerment, awareness and many other social issues have been running by the NGOs in India. Then there are many of the Biggies on the one hand, those are working on broader levels with advantages, sponsors, funds, opportunities on their side and whereas on the other hand there are small organizations which are trying to grow under many challenges and issues related to funding, opportunities, awareness, networking and approaches. These small NGOs have to face many issues in order to make themselves firm and grounded for their survival among the other big organizations. Following are the Challenges and Issues which the Small NGOs do face in their working and growth:

Fund Raising: The small NGOs face the difficulty in raising appropriate funds for the their functioning. Finding donors of funds is quite a tough task for them since they perceive a high dependency on the donors of funds. Donors or sponsors have their own conditions which they sometimes want to impose on these NGOs. Thus, these small NGOs face a lack of financial and resources mobilization and sustainability.

Impoverished Governance: Governance is a vital factor for an NGO for its better functioning and it also includes efficient people in the accomplishment of the goals and targets of the organization. These small NGOs face governance issues in which the people those who are involved in the working are found to behave self centered and wish to fulfill their own purposes through the means of the NGO. The board members do not pay attention to the need for the personnel and hardly feel to give allowance and incentives to their employees as a means of encouragement. Thus the working as well as the governance becomes weak.

Strategic Planning: Small NGOs lag in the proper strategy planning of resource mobilization, allocation, operational activities, fundraising process, human resource management and organizing the activities. Absence of planning makes them vulnerable and unmanaged. There is no planning of execution and accomplishment of the projects which usually leaves a big gap in the functionality and results achieved.

Networking : Small NGOs in India have a poor networking that is only limited to the local periphery. Local connections cannot help the NGOs to grow at a broader platform. The people who are involved in the functioning have a poor access and connections with limited people. This makes them lag in availing better opportunities, awareness, sharing insights and experience and also in resources development. Small NGOs in this way can only work in a very limited area and cannot map the measure of the broad problems of the society and big communities.

Communication and NGO Politics: Small organizations face a problem of lack of means of communication. There is a limited and poor access to technology and better facilities of communication in such small organizations. Access to computers, laptops in a big number is quite difficult. This further creates problems for a clear and transparent communication among the members, clients, and outsiders. And this also makes the people less aware of the information related to the works, literature and development of national, regional and global importance. There are a lot of politics in such small organizations. Everyone is fighting for resources and prestige. And there is also a political interference of the political leaders and representatives that try to keep a hold on the functioning of these small NGOs.

Carelessness of NGO Board and Weak Focus: The small organization lack in the awareness of the right code of conduct authorized by the NGO Council/Board. At the same time there is a carelessness of the NGO Council as well towards these small scale NGOs that doesn’t pay any serious attention towards their upliftment and development of the infrastructure and management.

Competition with Big NGOs: The small NGOs have to face a lot of competition by the big organization in order to survive in the commercial and homogeneous world. These biggies are in all respects considered to be better and flourished than the small ones. The accessibility to resources, Infrastructure, networking, fundraising and moreover the strategic and operational activities are quite bigger and better than the Small NGOs. This puts a lot of pressure on the small organizations to try harder in order to compete and all above to grow in their personal terms.
