India is a developing country and getting modernized. Basically modernization does not denote any philosophy or movement, but it only symbolizes a process of change. In fact, modernization is understood as a process which indicates the adoption of the modern ways of life and values. But when we analyze the process of modernization in Indian society, can we really declare that the Indian society has completely come out of the shell of orthodox credos that has bamboozled the mankind for a long time in history? The Answer is quite uncertain because the Indian society is still witnessing many of its social prejudices that were initially the basic elements of the its social system. However we say that Indian society is getting modernized but still the old caste prejudices are still maintaining to survive in the society that used to stratify the people at different levels.

Modernization encourages the making of people as liberal, broad-minded and democratic. Modern and educated people are believed to be less conservative and superstitious. Hence it was expected that with the growth of literacy and modernization in India, caste-mindedness and casteism would come down. On the contrary, caste-consciousness of the members has been rather increasing. Every caste wants to safeguard its interests. For fulfilling this purpose caste are getting themselves organized on the model of labor unions.

Today, every caste wants to organize itself. Such castes organizations are on the increase. Mainly to cater the educational, occupational, medical and religious needs of their members. Casteism is also exhibited in the Politics where the selection of candidates, voting analysis, selection of legislative party leaders, distribution of ministerial portfolios etc., are very much influenced by Caste ideologies. It was believed that the modern Indian society will be based on live and let live policy but on the contrary, each caste looks at the other with suspicion, contempt and jealousy and finds in it a challenger, a competitor. Excessive caste-mindedness and caste-patriotism have added to this competition. Today people of different castes are making new attempts to strengthen caste-loyalty, caste-identity and caste-mindedness . To what extent do you agree?
