    On 15th August 1947, at midnight, India was reborn as a free nation and to commemorate this day, Independence Day is celebrated throughout the nation with great enthusiasm and vigor. This day marks the end of British colonial rule in India and the various atrocities faced by Indians. It is the day of celebration of the freedom that the nation had attained 68 years ago by chasing off the British. Grand cultural programs are organized throughout the nation on this day. However, if you are unable to be a part of these programs, you can still enjoy it to the full extent sitting at home by watching some patriotic movies. Bollywood has made a number of movies that are based on patriotism as well as freedom struggle of India and on this day, enjoy the freedom by watching some of the best and practical patriotic movies which are reminiscent the freedom struggle. This movie was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, which narrates the sad saga of the 63-day fast unto death to improve the conditions of prisoners and their sacrifice for the nation.

The story of this movie is based on the people of a small village, who risk their future on a game of cricket against the callous British Government. An epic sports drama, which gyrates around the villagers, who learns cricket, accepting the challenge given to them by the British Government with the promise of removing the high taxes levied on them if they win. Even though it is not based on a true story, it provides a glimpse of the struggle and atrocities faced by the people of India in the pre-Independence era.

    A biopic of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, 1982 Hollywood film Gandhi is another worth watching patriotic movie on Independence Day. This movie won 8 Oscars, which included Best Actor for Ben Kingsley, Best Picture and Best Director for Richard Attenborough. This movie showed the all the major events of the life of Mahatma Gandhi till his assassination by Nathuram Godsey.

    Another must watch patriotic movie is LOC Kargil by JP Dutta. This movie is based on the true story of the Indian Soldiers during the 1999 India-Pakistan Kargil war. This movie has a huge star cast that includes Abhisekh Bacchan, Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, Saif Ali Khan etc. It depicts the battle as well as its consequence faced by some of the soldiers along with their respective families.

    Based on the 1962 Indo-China war, Haqeeqat is one of the must-watch patriotic movies. Starring Dharmendra, Priya Rajvansh, Vijay Anand and Balraj Sahni, this film depicts the story of a small troop of Indian soldiers who fought against the massive Chinese army during the chilling winters in the Ladakh region of India and sacrificed their lives for the motherland while protecting the borders against alien forces.

    Mangal Pandey: The Rising is a biography based on the life of Mangal Pandey, an Indian soldier who is known for his role in the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Starring Amir Khan, this movie narrates the life and incidents during British Rule. The gripping story of the movie provides an insight of the hardship of freedom struggle.

    Directed by Farhan Akhtar and starring Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles, Lakshya is another must watch patriotic movie. It is based on a fictional story of a pampered, goalless young boy, who realizes it when taken out of his comfort zone. He joins the Indian Army but without completing the training he returns home as he could not adjust to the rigorous training. However, on his returning home, he loses respect of all and finally decides to re-join the army and focused on his goal. He leads a brigade of Indian soldiers to victory over the Pakistani battalion.



    These are just a few patriotic movies that can be watched on Indian Independence Day. However, there is a gamut of Indian patriotic movies made in Bollywood that narrates different tales related to the freedom struggle of India as well as displays the patriotic spirit, which makes them worth watching.
